Dodge County Structure Fire Closes Highway
The state’s Department of Transportation says a section of State Highway 89 in Dodge County was closed this morning because of a structure fire. All lanes of the highway were closed between County Highways T and TV just north of Waterloo to allow crews to respond to the blaze. Fire crews responded to the scene about 3 am and the DOT issued an alert about the highway closure.
Jury Trial Scheduled For Beaver Dam Man Shot By Police
A 36-year-old Beaver Dam man shot by a police officer during a domestic dispute last October is scheduled for a four-day jury trial in Dodge County court this December. Richard Henke suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident in which he allegedly pointed a rifle at Beaver Dam Police Officer Brian Linzenmeyer. The officer believed Henke was going to kill him and the woman Henke had been dragging by the hair so he shot Henke. Henke’s trial is scheduled to begin December 17th. The Dodge County District Attorney’s Office cleared Linzenmeyer in the shooting saying it was justified.
State Budget Benefits
A state lawmaker from Fond du Lac says there are some benefits for the local area included in state budget approved by the State Assembly and Senate last week. Senator Dan Feyen the area has a number of state prisons and the budget includes a hike in starting pay for corrections workers. “One of the big things is a starting correctional officer’s wage will be going up by 14 percent. Right now they start out at about $16.65 you can get that at a lot of different places and not work with dangerous people all day long. We’ve bumped that up to $19 an hour.” Feyen also points that in addition there is increased transportation funding for counties, municipalities and towns and money in the budget for the expansion of State Highway 23 between Fond du Lac and Plymouth to four lanes.
Illegal Fireworks Can Start Fires
Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul says in addition to causing injuries illegal fireworks can cause fires. He recalls an incident two years ago when two individuals in a vehicle were shooting off fireworks and one of them went off before it left the car. “There was a group of individuals driving in a car shooting off fireworks from the car. There was a mishap with that where the firework went off in the car. People got severely burned, the car burned up and they crashed on top of that.” There was thousands of dollars of illegal fireworks in the car. One of the occupants of the vehicle had to be transferred to the burn center with second degree burns. He also points out last year someone shooting off illegal fireworks started a grass fire the fire department had to put out.
Ripon Businesses Pass Tobacco Compliance Check
Ripon businesses did well during a recent tobacco compliance check conducted by the Fond du Lac County Health Department Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. According to the Ripon Police Department six businesses were visited by youth in the program who see if clerks will check their ID for age. Clerks at Dollar General East, Kwik Trip East, Ripon BP, Ripon Shell, Webster’s Marketplace and Walgreens all verified the age of the buyer. Ripon Police commended those businesses for taking the responsibility to not sell tobacco products to underage individuals.
Omro Fourth Of July
With no Sawdust Days in Oshkosh to compete with officials in Omro are expecting even bigger crowds for their 4th of July festivities Thursday. Stephanie Hawkins is the Executive Director of the Future Omro Chamber/Main Street. She says they will have food and beverages available at Scott Park. “During the parade and after the parade we have food, and drink, and music all in the park. We also have the All-American Lumberjacks they come and do wood carving and log rolling. So those shows will be in the park too they will do three shows throughout the day.” Things get started with the Legion Pancake Breakfast from 7 to 11 am at Tanner’s Tap, followed by the parade at noon. Music will include the Third Wheels from 1:30 to 5 pm and Kenny James from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Fireworks will be at dusk. For a complete rundown of activities visit the Future Omro website.
