Oshkosh Considering Transportation Fee
The City of Oshkosh is considering doing away with special assessment fees to homeowners for the cost of fixing roads and sidewalks in favor of transportation fee that would be charged to every property owner in the city. The city is currently looking for a way to raise $3.25 million for road projects. If the new fee is approved both residential and non-residential properties would be charged $4.50 a month, per unit. A household is considered a residential unit. The fee would be incorporated into monthly utility bills. All properties in the city would still be subject to water, sewer and storm water special assessments.

Markesan Police are warning residents about a scam involving a spoofing of the police department’s phone number. Police say the caller claims to be with the US Legal Support team who claims the person they are talking to has 3 warrants out for them and if they don’t take care of them at once they will be going to jail. Budget For Tobacco Control And Prevention Programs Inadequate
You hear a lot of crowing from state lawmakers about what is included in the state budget for different programs, but that does not include an increase for those working in the field of tobacco control and prevention. Sandy Bernier is one such person who works for the Fond du Lac County Health Department. She coordinates a program for five counties including Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Washington and Waushara counties. She says as far as she knows funding levels for programs like her programs continue at the same funding level. “I only know that currently we are; I think we have the same flat funding that we’ve had which is not what the CDC recommends. A little over $5 million.” She says that’s not a lot for the whole state. She says they are facing pretty challenging times with youth increasing their use of electronic cigarette devices. Bernier says at one time there were 42 programs like the one she works for in the state, but a lot have consolidated their efforts because of lack of funding and now there are only 14.
