Ripon Common Council Considering Tall Grass Ordinance
10 July 2019 News
The Ripon Common Council at its next meeting will consider approving a tall grass ordinance that requires lawns to be maintained with grass no longer than 6 inches in height. The Council discussed the ordinance last night and felt it should delay action for a couple of weeks to allow the public to find out more about it. The city does have a noxious weed ordinance, but Police Chief Bill Wallner says there is nothing in it to address the length of grass in someone’s yard or on their property. The city would mow the property on a first violation and charge the cost to the property owner. Subsequent violations would result in fines and the cost of mowing the property. Residents would have five days to mow the property after they are issued notice of the violation. City Attorney Lud Wurtz says the new ordinance is not something the city is going to debate that if the grass on a property is over 6 inches tall they will mow it and there will be a charge for it. The Council last evening also approved a request allowing a group to stage a “Scoop the Loop” event in the downtown next month. It would be held on Saturday, August 10th from 5 to 9 pm.
