Eric Thames homered leading off the eighth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Sunday. Thames, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth, blasted an 0-1 pitch from Pirates reliever Kyle Crick (3-4) to straightaway center, a 432-foot shot that hit just below the scoreboard. Milwaukee took two of three from its NL Central rival and moved into a first-place tie with the Chicago Cubs, who lost to Cincinnati. The Brewers finished their homestand at 5-5. Jeremy Jeffress (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Matt Albers worked the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Milwaukee’s Zach Davies, who had an 8.10 ERA over his previous four starts, allowed one run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two. He also drove in the Brewers’ first run with a two-out single in the fourth after the Pirates intentionally waked Manny Piña. Melky Cabrera had a run-scoring single in the first for the Pirates. Pittsburgh’s Steven Brault allowed one run and five hits but lasted just 4 2/3 innings after throwing 97 pitches. Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman had his hitting streak halted at 19 games.
Adrian Houser (2-2, 2.94) will make his fourth start of the season Monday as Milwaukee begins a four-game series at Cincinnati. Houser is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA as a starter. First pitch is at 6:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central Sunday, the Reds beat the Cubs 8-6 and the Cardinals beat the Padres 5-3. The Cubs and Brewers are tied for first in the division, the Cardinals are 3 games back, Pittsburgh 5 and Cincinnati 5 ½.
Catcher Yasmani Grandal, second baseman Mike Moustakas and pitcher Josh Hader have all been named to the National League All-Star team. They join outfielder Christian Yelich, who was elected a starter earlier this week. This represents the second career All-Star Game selection for Yelich, and his first start. For Grandal (2015, 2019), and Hader (2018, 2019), this will be a second career All-Star Game selection. For Moustakas, this will be his third selection (2015, 2017, 2019). The All-Star Game is july 9th.
Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is set to become the youngest participant in Home Run Derby history when he swings for the $1 million prize in Cleveland on July 8th. Major League Baseball confirmed Sunday that Guerrero will participate, joining a group that includes Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich, Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso, Pittsburgh’s Josh Bell and Cleveland’s Carlos Santana. The full field will be revealed Wednesday.
A person familiar with the situation says Khris Middleton plans to agree to a five-year deal worth nearly $179 million to remain with the Milwaukee Bucks. The fifth year is at Middleton’s option, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday. Middleton was an All-Star for the first time last season, averaging 18.3 points per game for a Milwaukee team that finished the regular season with an NBA best 60 wins. His deal is not quite the max; he could have commanded closer to $190 million over the five years. It’s also being reported that forward Brook Lopez will re-sign with the Bucks to a four-year deal worth $52 million. Milwaukee has also sent guard Malcolm Brogdon to the Pacers in a sign and trade and received three draft picks in return, one first-round pick and two second-round picks along with a $12 million trade exception.
In Northwoods League baseball action, Wisconsin Rapids defeated the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, 5-1. The Dock Spiders return home tonight to host the Wisconsin Woodchucks.
In men’s golf, Nate Lashley won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit by six strokes. He led wire-to-wire in winning his first PGA event. And, Steve Stricker made his U.S. Senior Open debut one for the record book by closing with a 1-under 69 to set the 72-hole record and win by six shots. Jerry Kelly (69) and defending champion David Toms (68) tied for second. Stricker finished 19-under.
