Operation Dry Water Was About Voluntary Compliance

Voluntary compliance is what authorities were hoping for during the National Operation Dry Water enforcement effort over the 4th of July holiday weekend. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Chris Dobyns says just like drunken or drugged driving on our road ways a number of serious accidents on our waterways occur because the boat operator is impaired. He says penalties for boating under the influence are the same as drunken driving, but the boater may also be required to take a boating safety course something anyone operating a boat is supposed to have done if they born on or after January 1st of 1989 anyway. “We are starting to get into the time from now that most of the people we encounter out on the waterways have already had a boater safety course, but there still is a good chunk of people out there that never had to take boater safety and they just operate the boat on the waterways the way they grew up doing.” In 2018 in Wisconsin there were 21 fatalities on waterways and in about a fifth of them alcohol was a factor. The Sheriff’s Department, DNR, and U.S. Coast Guard participated in the effort in the county.

Ripon PD K9 Program

The handler for the Ripon Police Department K9 program says it has worked out well since it was founded in 1998. There have been three dogs in the program over the years, which went on hiatus for a couple of years. Officer Trevor Henke partners with K9 Rony. He says the dog is dual purpose serving in a patrol capacity and also to detect narcotics. He says they also do community presentations for schools and groups. “Our biggest thing is a lot of our community involvement in doing our presentations. We do a fair amount of drug work as far as vehicle sniffs.  He rides around and let’s people know he’s there so hopefully they become compliant. We like to have compliant people.” Officer Henke says because Rony is the only police dog assigned to day shift in the county they do a lot of mutual aid for other departments on narcotic sniffs including the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department, City of Fond du Lac, Green Lake County Sheriff’s Department if they don’t have a dog working during the day, and the State Patrol. Rony has been serving the Ripon Police Department for a little over four years.

Ripon Grilling Ordinance

Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul reminds residents that they are not allowed to grill on the deck of a two-story apartment building or on balconies. You also have to be at least 10 feet away from a structure. He says they nearly had a structure fire when he saw someone grilling on a deck on the second floor of an apartment building. He doesn’t like having to inform people they can’t do that. “I feel bad about doing that in one way because I understand people get home from work they want to grill a steak, but you know it is inconvenient. People live on the second floor of an apartment they go outside, walk out 10 feet, remember our grills are 10 feet from our houses also, to walk out and grill.” He says the ordinance prohibiting grilling on balconies and second-story decks is about public safety.

There will also be a SWAT Team Display, K9 and Drone, and Fatal Vision and Project Lifesaver presentations and more. The program will be from 5 to 8 pm at the Coffee Shop.

The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands recently approved the $115,000 loan for the village and a total of $14 million in financing for projects in nine counties across the state. The largest of the eleven loans is a $6 million loan to the Verona Area School District to finance referendum projects.
