It was a tough loss for the Brewers last night in Oakland as Matt Olson hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning off Josh Hader to give the A’s a 3-2 victory. The Brewers did have a number of bright spots. Adrian Houser rejoined a starting rotation depleted by injuries and delivered five good innings, Lorenzo Cain saved a run and possibly two with another diving catch in the sixth. Yasmani Grandal hit a tying single in the eighth inning, and Eric Thames snapped an 0-for-17 slump with a tying home run in the ninth. It was a good fight, but not enough. The A’s got a go-ahead home run from Khris Davis in the eighth and after Thames blast tied it, Olson won it. In the opening game of the Brewers’ nine-game road trip that will cover three cities in three different time zones, Oakland beat Josh Hader. Ten of the 24 hits against him this season have cleared the fence in 51 innings. Last year, he allowed nine home runs in 91 1/3 innings including the postseason. It was the Brewers’ second straight loss after winning eight of the previous 11. Leaky pitching and all, they are two games behind the first-place Cardinals and one game behind the Cubs in a tight National League Central. Wednesday’s 3:00 CDT trading deadline marks general manager David Stearns’ last chance to improve the roster from outside. Houser, making his first start since July 15th , delivered five innings on 69 pitches in his return to Milwaukee’s rotation. He allowed Olson’s RBI double with two outs in the third inning but little else while holding Oakland to that lone run on three hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. Game two of their three-game series is tonight. Jordan Lyles, who’s 5-7, will make his first start for Milwaukee after being acquired in a trade from the Pirates on Monday against Oakland’s Brett Anderson, who’s 9-6. First pitch is at 9:07 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Tuesday, the Pirates pounded the Reds 11-4 and the Cardinals edged the Cubs 2-1.
In the Northwoods League, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders won at home 6-5 over the Lakeshore Chinooks. The two teams meet again tonight at Lakeshore with a 6:35 first pitch.
The Packers fifth practice of training camp was not a pleasing one for head coach Matt LaFleur on Tuesday. The first-year coach was agitated with the performance of the offense, saying there should be more urgency. The Packers are two days away from Family Night Friday evening at Lambeau Field.
The Milwaukee Bucks have signed free agent forward Dragan Bender. Bender played the last three seasons with Phoenix after being selected by the Suns with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. In 2018-19, he averaged 5.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 18.0 minutes per game, appearing in 46 games
(27 starts) while shooting a career-high 44.7% from the field. In his three seasons
with Phoenix, Bender held averages of 5.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in
171 games (64 starts).
The 7-1 forward was selected by the Suns after playing one season In Israel.
