Zach Davies surrendered a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning and the Reds pounded the Brewers 14-6 Tuesday night at Miller Park. Davies, Alex Claudio and Burch Smith combined to surrender 10 more runs, nine of them earned, in a three-inning stretch from the fifth to the seventh. The Brewers, coming off consecutive series victories against the Braves and D-backs, guaranteed a series loss to the Reds and fell to 9-19 against teams with losing records over the past six weeks. That stretch includes five straight losses to the Reds. Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker hit two-run homers in the first and Joey Votto added another two-run shot in the sixth. Phillip Ervin had a three-run triple as the Reds pounded out 17 hits. The Brewers managed 10 hits including Manny Pina’s sixth home run of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth. Pina had 4 RBI’s on the night. Davies lasted four innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits. Reds starter Tanner Roark, went five innings and gave up two runs on six hits and evened his record at 6-6. The teams wrap up their three-game series this afternoon. Lucas Sims, 1-0, goes for Cincinnati against Milwaukee’s Jhoulys Chacin, who’s 3-10. First pitch is at 1:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central the Cardinals edged the Pirates 4-3 and the Giants nipped the Cubs 5-4. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by a half-game and the Brewers by two.
Waupun defeated Ripon 3-1 to capture the American Legion Region 6 title on Tuesday. Waupun advances to the Legion state tournament in Westby,July 26th-30th.
The Green Bay Packers have signed DL Dean Lowry to a contract extension. Lowry, who was going to enter the final year of his rookie contract, was drafted out of Northwestern in the fourth round (No. 137 overall) by the Packers in 2016. He has only missed one game in his first three years, appearing in 47 regular-season contests with 19 starts. In three seasons, he has registered 105 tackles (69 solo), seven sacks, seven passes defensed, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Lowry saw action in all 16 games and made eight starts in 2018, setting career highs in tackles (57), solo tackles (39), sacks (three) and passes defensed (four) while also registering the first forced fumble of his career. He earned NFC defensive player of the week honors for his performance vs. Tampa Bay in Week 13 in 2017. Lowry posted four tackles (all solo), a sack, a QB pressure and a QB hit, and registered his first career TD after recovering a QB Jameis Winston fumble forced by DL Kenny Clark at the Green Bay 38 late in the second quarter and returning it 62 yards. He became just the seventh Green Bay player (since 1982) to register a sack and a defensive TD in the same game.
The Green Bay Packers moved into the St. Norbert College dorms Tuesday afternoon, returning for training camp, which begins Thursday. The Packers take the field for the first training camp practice Thursday morning, one of fifteen practices open to the public at Ray Nitschke Field.
