Sports from Wayne Mausser

The 2019 Brewers waited until the seventh inning of their 96th game to hit their first grand slam, and of course it was Christian Yelich who did it.  Yelich’s slam capped a six-run outburst in a 13-1 win over the Braves at Miller Park on Tuesday that had contributions from all corners of the lineup card — all after president of baseball operations David Stearns said the team’s play over the two weeks leading to the July 31 Trade Deadline would help dictate whether he fortifies the roster. The Brewers’ most lopsided victory this season was just their third in 11 games.  They had not won a game by more than two runs in more than a month, since a 6-3 win in 14 innings on June 12 in Houston. They had not won by more than three runs since five days before that against the Pirates at home, which was also the last time Milwaukee managed to score in double digits. Yelich connected against Braves right-hander Huascar Ynoa with the bases loaded and two down in the seventh.  Dodgers slugger Cody Bellnger also hit a home run on Tuesday, his 34th, so Yelich remains one back.  The two have homered on the same day ten times this season.  Yelich also walked twice and scored three runs and rookie Keston Hiura homered in his first at-bat and finished with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI’s. Mike Moustakas tallied his 999th and 1,000 career hits, Ben Gamel had a pair of RBI singles and Lorenzo Cain homered to lead a balanced offensive attack.  Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff  struck out seven over 6 2/3 innings.  Tyler Flowers homered for the Braves only run. The team’s finish their three-game series this afternoon.  Dallas Keuchel, 3-2, goes for Atlanta against Milwaukee’s Chase Anderson, who’s 4-2.  First pitch is at 1:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Tuesday, the Cubs edged the Reds 4-3 and Pittsburgh beat St. Louis 3-1.  The Cubs are 2 ½ games ahead of the Brewers and three games ahead of St. Louis.

The Milwaukee Bucks announced Tuesday that they have signed free agent forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo, the older brother of Bucks forward and NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.  He joins Milwaukee on a guaranteed two-year, minimum contract.  The 26-year old Antetokounmpo spent the last two seasons with Panathinaikos of the Greek Basket League, where he helped the team to two straight league titles.

In golf, the British Open gets underway today in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

With the completion of community service, a marijuana possession charge against former Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers tight end Lance Kendricks has been dismissed.  Kendricks, 30, was originally given a ticket after a September 2017 traffic stop in Outagamie County. However, the ticket was dropped and a misdemeanor count was filed
