Sports from Wayne Mausser

Tyler Saladino’s second grand-slam in as many days wasn’t enough as the Reds edged the Brewers 6-5 in the opener of their series at Miller Park Monday night.  After Saladino homered in the bottom of the 8th to give the Brewers a 5-4 lead, Eugenio Suarez hit his second two-run homer of the game in the span of three innings in the top of the ninth to give Cincinnati the lead for good.  The second one was a no-doubter off a Jeremy Jeffress curveball on a 1-0 count with two outs.  The Brewers lost a game they led after eight innings for the first time all season.  The blown save went to Jeffress, pitching for the third straight day and the fourth time in five days, because Josh Hader was unavailable following back-to-back 12 pitch outings Saturday and Sunday in Arizona.  It was the second time the Brewers were burned with two outs and a base open.  In the sixth, Jose Iglesias greeted reliever Matt Albers with a tie-breaking single that gave the Reds a 2-1 lead on the way to a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth. Brewers starter Chase Anderson, who pitched into the sixth inning in his 100th career starts, lowered his ERA to 3.90.  Anderson went 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two. Reds starter Sonny Gray went six innings, giving up a run on four hits while striking out seven and walking two. Wandy Peralta picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-1 on the season while Jeffress drops to 3-3.  The two teams meet again tonight as Tanner Roark, 5-6, starts for the Reds against the Brewers Zach Davies, who’s 8-2.  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central, the Giants edged the Cubs 5-4 and the Cardinals nipped the Pirates 6-5. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by 1 ½ games and the Brewers by two.

Ripon defeated East Troy 6-3 in the Legion Regional in Waupun Monday night.   Bailey Revels had a 2 out 3 run, triple in the 1st inning to help lift Ripon past East Troy.   Ripon faces Waupun which beat Horicon 14-4, for the regional championship with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Westby. The game starts at 5 today in Waupun.
