Hometown Broadcasting Sports Thursday 7/11/19

11 July 2019 Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Construction workers sounded air horns above crowds chanting “USA! USA!” on Wednesday as the U.S. women’s national soccer team reigned supreme once again in New York City’s Canyon of Heroes.  The 2019  repeat champs beat the Netherlands 2-0 on Sunday to win the 2019 Women’s World Cup.  The parade began at 9:30 a.m. and moved up the Canyon of Heroes, a section of Broadway in lower Manhattan. The route has long hosted ticker tape parades for world leaders, veterans and hometown sports stars.

Major League Baseball resumes tonight with the Astros playing the Rangers in Arlington.  The Brewers return to action tomorrow night, as they host the Giants.  Chase Anderson, 3-2, starts for Milwaukee. The Giants have not yet named their starter.   First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Meanwhile, in the Central Division, the Cubs lead the Brewers by a half-game.  The Cardinals are two games back, the Pirates are 2 ½ out and the Reds are 4 ½ games behind.

Speculation is the Brewers will attempt to add some pitching to their staff.  All-Star Brandon Woodruff and fellow right-hander Zach Davies had solid first halves and reliever Josh Hader has again been stellar coming out of the bullpen this time in as a closer,  but the club still needs some help in that department. Among the available pitchers are a handful of pending free agents, including Madison Bumgarner of the Giants and Zach Wheeler of the Mets.  The Brewers have had some talks with the Giants.
