Sports from Wayne Mausser

Tyler Saladino had his first career grand slam, Mike Moustakas hit a go-ahead run-scoring single in the eighth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 on Sunday. Saladino broke out of a season-long slump with his first homer of the year, a grand slam off Alex Young in the fourth inning after Milwaukee fell behind 4-0. Moustakas hit a go-ahead three-run homer in Saturday night’s 8-3 win and put the Brewers ahead late again, chopping a single through the middle after Keston Hiura led off the eighth inning with a triple against Yoan Lopez (1-4). Pinch hitter Yasmani Grandal followed with a run-scoring double and Ben Gamel added an RBI single to put Milwaukee up 7-4.  Freddy Peralta (4-3) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Josh Hader worked around a single in the ninth for his 22nd save. The Brewers have won five of six. Milwaukee All-Star right-hander Brandon Woodruff allowed four runs before leaving after two pitches in the fourth with an abdominal injury. Alex Avila hit his 100th career homer, a two-run shot in the second inning to put the Diamondbacks up 4-0.  Woodruff has been Milwaukee’s best pitcher this season while earning his first NL All-Star bid. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed three earned runs in 20 1/3 innings over his three previous starts before arriving in the desert, but the Diamondbacks hit him hard from the start.  Christian Walker had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, Avila hit a two-run homer high off the centerfield wall and Eduardo Escobar put Arizona up 4-0 in the third with a run-scoring single. Woodruff left the game after grimacing on his second pitch to Tim Locastro to open the fourth inning. The team said he suffered “abdominal discomfort.” Woodruff was replaced by Junior Guerra, who struck out the side after finishing off Locastro.

The Cubs return  home to face the Reds tonight.  Sonny Gray, who’s 5-6, will start for Cincinnati against Milwaukee’s Chase Anderson, who’s 5-2.  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central, the Padres beat the Cubs 5-1, the Phillies nipped the Pirates 2-1, and the Cardinals over the Reds 3-1.  The Cubs lead the Brewers by two games and St. Louis by 2 ½ .

In other Brewers news, right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson pitched an inning for Class-A Wisconsin on Sunday in his first rehab assignment while recovering from an elbow injury.  Ryan Braun was out of the lineup with a stiff back, but he did fly out as a pinch hitter in the ninth.  Braun will miss Monday’s game against the Reds to attend the funeral of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who was found dead in a Texas hotel room on July 1st.

The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Malik Taylor. Taylor, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound rookie out of Ferris State University, spent some time with the Tampa Buccaneers in May. Even though he missed out on most of his senior season due to injury, he finished his collegiate career with 121 receptions for 2,091 yards (17.3 avg.), the seventh most receiving yards in school history. In 2017, Taylor earned all-conference honors after registering a team-high 61 receptions for 906 yards (14.9 avg.) and six touchdowns. He also returned eight kicks for 154 yards (19.3 avg.) as a junior. Taylor will wear No. 86 for the Packers.

The Green and Gold will turn into the Blue and Gold this September. The Packers say they will wear their alternate uniforms when they host the Denver Broncos Sept. 22 at Lambeau Field. The uniforms feature plain yellow helmets with green face masks, blue jerseys with yellow numbers and shoulder yokes, khaki-colored pants and blue-topped socks. The design is based on the team’s 1937-48 look, a span in which Green Bay won two of its 13 NFL titles.  The current version of the throwback uniform was introduced in 2015 and has been worn a total of four times since then. The Packers are 2-2 in those games.

In golf, Ireland’s Shane Lowry won the British Open Sunday, his first Major. He shot a final round 72 to finish at 15-under for the tournament, six shots ahead of England’s Tommy Fleetwood.  Tony Finau finished in third at seven-under while Lee Westwood and Brooks Koepka finished at six-under.

In Nascar,  Kevin Harvick edged Denny Hamlin to win at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
