Winnebago County Considering Allowing Use Of ATVs On County Roads

Winnebago County supervisors are mulling over whether to allow All-Terrain Vehicles on county roads.  A proposed ordinance is heading back to a committee for changes. The ordinance would allow ATVs and UTVs on a number of county roads from May 1st through October 31st.  Many county supervisors are worried about the suitability of several county roads for that type of use. Others would like to see year round use. Sheriff John Matz is worried about mixing traffic on those roads and feels it would be a way to circumvent the state’s drunken driving laws.  Penalties for operating an ATV or UTV under the influence aren’t the same as a vehicle and you don’t need a driver’s license to ride one.

Grothman On Condemnation Vote

Congressman Glenn Grothman was among the GOP House members who voted against a condemnation of President Trump for what has been perceived as a racist tweet about four freshman Congress women of color. The House Tuesday approved the censure by a 240 to 187 vote condemning the President’s remarks. Grothman says the “go back to their home countries” comment was perceived the wrong way and just more fuel for the fire generated by the Democrat-controlled House. “I voted against it of course because I think it was a waste of time as well as I thought it was a mischaracterization of what President Trump said. I think the whole world wants to come in here and people want to fundamentally change America, it’s just ridiculous.” Grothman says the USA is not the “horrible, racist country” some say it is. He says claiming it is should not be the way to try sway minorities into voting for you.

Dodge County Supervisors Approve Extension Of Retired Employees Health Benefits

The Dodge County Board this week approved an extension of the benefits package for retired county employees. The policy, which was first implemented in 2006, pays out 80-percent of an employee’s accumulated sick leave into a post-employment health plan deposit account. The funds are restricted to the payment of insurance premiums. Supervisors approved a policy that extends the post-employment health plan through the year 2022. It was set to expire at the end of 2020. The county board will revisit the policy again in two years’ time.

Today At The FDL County Fair

Animals take center stage at the Fond du Lac County Fair today. The annual Market Livestock Auction is at the Cow Palace from 4:15 to 7:45 pm beginning with a reception. For 4-H and FFA members it’s the culmination of raising those animals. Fair Board Treasurer Matt Immel says buying one of those animals supports those youth and prices are comparable to what you buy in a supermarket or meat processor. “If you were to buy a steer for example and buy it conventionally through the grocery store what you would pay versus if you purchased one through the fair support the youth in the process you would know where your animal comes from and it is actually a competitive buy if you look at the price per pound.” Also tonight at the Fair Professional Bull Riding and Barrel Racing will be held at the Grandstand beginning at 7:30 pm. County officials are also urging fairgoers to take breaks in their air-conditioned buildings and drink plenty of water during this heat advisory.

FDL County Fair Cooling Sites

Due to extreme heat this weekend, the Fond du Lac County Fair has designated two cooling sites, the Expo Center and the Rec Center. Both buildings are air-conditioned for anyone attending the fair to use. Also, to avoid heat related illness, bottled water will be allowed to be carried into the fair. The fair runs through Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Fond du Lac.

Eldorado Community Picnic This Weekend

The Eldorado Community Picnic is coming up this Saturday and Sunday. It includes music, food, games and of course Hog Wrestling. Organizers say they are “Celebrating 16 years of getting down and dirty” when it comes to four-person teams wrestling the hogs in a pit. “Basically what happens; it is a large ring there is a padded barrel in the center. Four people start on one side the pig is on the other when the referee says go you’ve got up to 60 seconds to get that pig onto the barrel, but the winner has the fastest time for the day.” It costs five dollars to watch the pig wrestling. Eldorado Fireman Noah Henke says gates will open at the Community Park at noon Saturday with the pig wrestling at 2 pm. Driftwood will perform at 8 pm. Sunday at 11 am there is the parade in Eldorado with a chicken dinner at noon, and The Del Rays will perform from 1 to 5 pm. More information is available at the Eldorado Community Picnic website. Profits are split between the Eldorado Lions and the fire department, which goes back into community efforts.
