FDL Man Involved In Standoff Waives Preliminary Hearing

The 27-year-old Fond du Lac man who barricaded himself and three children in an apartment last month has been bound over for trial. Takarie Cook waived his preliminary hearing in Fond du Lac County court last Thursday.  On June 4th Cook armed himself with a knife during the incident in the 100 block of East Johnson Street. He had three children with him in an upstairs apartment. One child escaped and the other two were rescued when a police SWAT team used an explosive breach to enter the apartment.

Plenty Of Lodging In The Area Even With Heidel House Closing

The executive director of the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce says the closing of Heidel House this summer was unfortunate, but area hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds are picking up the slack. Jason Mansmith losing 300 plus hotel rooms does make a dent. He says the chamber works with other chambers and businesses in Green Lake, Berlin, Markesan, Princeton and Ripon who can offer lodging. “There is still about 700 hotel rooms amongst those communities. So there are plenty of places to stay, but obviously we are seeing a little bit of some down tick in some kind of visitors kind of looking for those locations. But there are plenty of other spots able to fill their needs.” Mansmith says on the other hand the chamber in Ripon had their busiest June in the past six or seven years in terms of people through the door. Green Lake officials are working with a potential buyer for the Heidel House Resort, but only the resort portion.

Ripon Park Access A Concern

Expect some discussion between the Ripon City Council and the railroad about no trespassing signs posted near an area known at Stewart Park. The Council recently discussed the issue. The railroad installed no trespassing signs at the gravel crossing behind the Union Hall. The crossing doesn’t meet railroad standards and the railroad has liability concerns. The Council was informed that the railroad doesn’t want vehicles crossing the tracks, but the City is welcome to go there to do maintenance. The railroad is also okay with people walking across the tracks to enter the park area. Alderperson Al Schraeder says for the past 24 years there have been no issues and now there is. He says although it is not a full blown park people use it for example to fish. The park is essentially land-locked.

Transportation Aids Sent Out

Local governments recently received quarterly payments from the state for transportation, highway and policing aids. Governor Tony Evers says those aides totaled nearly $146 million. For Dodge County the payments came to $1.39 million, Fond du Lac County $1.27 million, Green Lake County over $401,000, Marquette County $355,000, Waushara County over $438,000, and Winnebago County a little over $1 million. Cities, towns and villages also receive the payments. July payments were made to 1922 local units of government in Wisconsin.
