Ripon Common Council Approves Refunding Of Bonds

Ripon’s Common Council this week approved refunding of just under $3.1 million for Tax Incremental District 11. City financial consultant Phil Cosson of Ehlers & Associates told the Council by refinancing the city will be able to save $255,000 in interest payments over the next 11 years or about $23,000 a year. He says one of the benefits of doing that is that it will improve the cash flow in the TID district. He will return for the Council’s August 26th meeting to give them information about the bond sale results. Cosson noted the closing date for the sale of the bonds is September 19th.

American Tribute Ride Saturday

The American Tribute Ride featuring a convoy of about 200 motorcycles will be in the area Saturday. The ride will start out with on-site registration at the Lamartine Fire Station and the ride setting off at 11:30 am. A short opening ceremony at 10:50 will honor the two Wisconsin firefighters including Sun Prairie Fire Captain Cory Barr and two Milwaukee police officers that lost their lives in the line of duty this past year. Ron Naab is chairman of the organizing committee. He says the event raises funds for a number of charitable efforts. “This year some of it will go to the Old Glory Honor Flights, some of it will go to the Wisconsin Youth Summer camp for youth burn survivors, some it will go to the State Firefighters Memorial.” Funds will also benefit the Line of Duty Support Program and the Veterans Housing and Recovery Program. Stops along the ride will include firehouses in Markesan, Neshkoro, Grand Haven and the ride will end up at the Coloma Village Park where there will be a memorial service and dinner. Naab says along the route there will be support displayed by area fire departments and veterans.

The Sopwith Flys Again At AirVenture

Very few of the fighter planes from WW I still exist and most are in museums in Europe, but you can see a version of one at EAA AirVenture. Ki p Lankenau is the owner of Kip Aero. The plane he built is modeled after a 1916 Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter. The British and French both had versions of the biplane during WW I. Lankenau says it was advanced for its time. “It was the first allied aircraft that had a machine gun synchronized to fire through the propeller arch. So that in itself made it a very formidable fighter when it first came out. So it was one of the first fighters on the Allied side capable of keeping up with the German aircraft.”
