Ticks And Lyme Disease

In the past 10 years the number of Lyme Disease cases in Wisconsin has doubled. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the best thing you can do it take measures to avoid being bitten by ticks. She says if you spend time in tall brush areas or your pet does, check yourself for ticks daily. “If you are out in like tall brush areas where ticks like to hang out so if you are walking in tall brush or your pets are walking in tall brush every night before you hit the hay just make sure you check yourself for those ticks.” She also recommends using insect repellent with 20 to 30 percent DEET, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and high socks with pant cuffs. She says if you do get bitten by a tick use a tweezers to remove it and grip the tick by the mouthparts as close to the skin as you can get. Pull straight up and wash the area with soap and water. If the head comes off it should fall out within a couple of days. A tick has to be attached to a person for at least 24 hours to spread Lyme disease.

Spring Turkey Hunt Numbers Down Slightly

The state’s DNR reports preliminary totals show Wisconsin turkey hunters registered 38,556 birds during the 2019 spring turkey hunting season. That’s down a little over 300 birds from the spring 2018 season. Officials say numbers were up for the Youth Hunt with just under 2,000 birds registered compared to 950 birds last year. But last year’s Youth Hunt was hampered by a severe snowstorm in April. More than 213,000 harvest authorizations were approved for the hunt in April and May up about 300 from 2018.
