Adrian Houser wasn’t the answer to the Brewers’ starting-pitching problem in a 4-2 loss to the Mariners on Wednesday at Miller Park. Mike Moustakas bolstered his All-Star candidacy by hitting his 23rd home run and Ben Gamel raced around the bases for an inside-the-park homer against his former team. Houser put the Brewers in a 3-0 hole after laboring through two long innings in his return to the rotation. The 26-year old yielded as many earned runs, three, in those two innings against the Mariners as he’d allowed in 25 2/3 innings of relief this season. Mallex Smith led off with a triple and scored on J.P. Crawford’s double in what became a two run inning. In the second, Crawford delivered a two-out RBI triple to extend the lead to 3-0. Houser allowed four hits and three walks and boosted the ERA of Brewers starters in June to 6.81. Freddy Peralta followed with four scoreless innings but the early runs were enough for the Mariners and left-hander Wade LeBlanc, who kept the Brewers off the board until Moustakas’ home run leading off the sixth and Game’s two batters later that pulled Milwaukee to within one run. The Brewers have lost nine of 12 games and 10 of their last 14 going into this afternoon’s series finale. Chase Anderson, 3-2, will start against Seattle’s Mike Leake, who’s 7-6. First pitch is at 1:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Meanwhile, centerfielder Lorenzo Cain could be back in the lineup today or at the latest tomorrow, after receiving a cryotherapy treatment and cortisone injection at the base of his right thumb.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Wednesday, Oakland shut out St. Louis 2-0, the Braves knocked off the Cubs 5-3, the Dodgers beat the Reds 5-3 and Pittsburgh bombed Houston 14-2. The Cubs remain a game ahead of the Brewers in the division while the Cardinals are 2 ½ out and Pittsburgh is 5 games behind. The Reds are 6 games out.
The All-Star Starters Election ballot is open until 3:00 this afternoon. Christian Yelich is first in the votes for outfielders, while Yasmani Grandal is third among catchers and Mike Moustakas is third among second-basemen.
