Recycling Fee Discussed By Ripon Common Council
27 June 2019 News
The Ripon Common Council has for the time being tabled talk about putting recycling costs on property taxes as a line item. Alderman Doug Iverson introduced the proposal noting it’s not a covered service the state expects municipalities to provide, but the state mandates curbside pickup for communities with populations of 5,000 or more. In January when the city renegotiated its 5-year contract with Waste Management the cost of recycling pickup increased by $32,000 a year to over $110,000. Iverson told the Council this week that City Administrator Lori Rich is still trying to find ways to make up that $32,000 increase in this year’s budget. The cost for residential pickup of recyclables would amount to about $45 a year for residents. But Council members felt before any more talk about the proposal a letter should be sent out to residents with their sewer and water bills explaining the impact the state’s freeze on the property tax levy has on the city and how the money raised for recycling would be used. The proposal could be brought back during the city’s budget process.
