Proposal Made To Add Recycling Costs To Ripon Property Tax

12 June 2019 News

(Ripon Alderman Douglas Iverson)

The Ripon Common Council is considering adding the cost of recycling collection to the property tax. Alderman Doug Iverson introduced the proposal to the Council last evening. The City currently foots the bill itself, which comes to about $110,000. Iverson noted it cost the City about $32,000 more for recycling collection this year. City Administrator Lori Rich estimates it would add about $42 to $45 per household to the property tax each year. The state mandates recycling, but over the years cut state funding to municipalities for collection. The City collects recyclables for homes and apartments with up to four units. Businesses are responsible for arranging their own recycling collection. Alderman Aaron Becker was the only one objecting to the proposal saying he didn’t have the appetite for another add on to the property tax. By a 6 to 1 vote the Council decided to add the proposal to its next meeting for possible action.
