Zach Davies allowed eight hits over eight-plus innings, giving Milwaukee’s bullpen a welcome break in a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday. Davies, 6-0, struck out three and walked one to remain unbeaten. He left after allowing a leadoff double to Colin Moran in the ninth. Corbin Burnes inherited a two-on, one-out jam but wiggled free to pick up his first save of the season and second of his career.
Eric Thames hit a two-run homer and an RBI double for Milwaukee. Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun each had two hits.
The Brewers are off today before opening a home series against Miami on Tuesday night.
In other Brewers news, RHP Jhoulys Chacin was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. RHP Jimmy Nelson will start in Chacin’s place on Wednesday against Miami, Nelson’s first major league appearance since injuring his right shoulder on September 8th, 2017. Second baseman Mike Moustakus, who has a bruised right hand, was held out of Sunday’s lineup as a precaution a day after being hit with a 101 mph fastball by Pirates closer Felipe Vasquez.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central Sunday, the Cardinals edged the Cubs 2-1 and the Nationals beat the Reds 4-1. The Brewers lead the Cubs ay 1 ½ games in the division, the Cardinals are 3 games back, Pittsburgh is 5 games out and Cincinnati is 6 ½ games behind.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders took their second straight game from the Lakeshore Chinooks over the weekend, winning 5-2 on Sunday.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trailed the Peoria Chiefs 5-1 but stormed back to win 8-5 Sunday to salvage the final game of their weekend series.
Kyle Busch won at Pocono Raceway on Sunday to move into a tie for ninth on the NASCAR Cup Series victory list. Busch, who topped 200 career wins across all three national series earlier this season, won for the 55 time in Cup racing and matched Hall of Fame driver Rusty Wallace on the list. Brad Keselowski was second and Erik Jones third.
Golden State evened the NBA Finals with a come-from-behind 109-104 victory at Toronto last night. Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 25 points, Steph Curry added 23 and Draymond Green chipped in with 17. Kawhi Leonard led the Raptors with 34 points. Game three is Wednesday night at Golden State.
In golf, Patrick Cantlay won the Memorial Sunday by two strokes over Adam Scott. Third round leader Martin Kaymer struggled and finished four strokes off the pace.
Berlin High School senior Bradon Gulch made it to the podium again this year at the WIAA State Track and Field meet Friday with a third-place finish in the shot put. Gulch, who won the event last year in Division 2, threw the shot 53 feet, 4 inches. Adam Strouf of Rice Lake took first place with a toss of 56 feet and Nekoosa’s Logan Cleary came in second at 54 9, ¾.
The Berlin boy’s 3,200 meter realy team finished third. The team consists of Dirk Lueck, Isaac Lueck, Garrett Krueger and Ryan Bartol. The Indians finished in a time of 8:05:98, just ahead of Catholic Memorial and Omro.
Also, Berlin junior Austin Kopitzke finished 15th in the boys long jump at 19.9.25 and junior Natalie Nigbor took 12th in the girls triple jump at 34-775.
Fond du Lac Senior Andrew Stone won the shot put with a toss of 61-3.
Ripon junior Alex Rodriquez finished 10th in the Division 2 shot put with a heave of 44′ 9.5”.
Oshkosh North’s Jack Scherer finished fourth in the Division 1 , 3,200 meter run with a time of 9:14:14.
The Oshkosh West boys finished 4th in the 400 meter relay.
The Oshkosh West girls came in thrid in the 800 meter relay. The Oshkosh West girls also took 4th in the 400 meter relay.
Oshkosh West senior Blake Franke finished 25th in the Division 1 triple jump and Wildcats senior Max Messina took 23rd in the discus throw.
The Kimberly and Freedom boys won state team track and field titles.
The Division 1 boys 1,600 relay was run twice. During the third handoff of the first race there was a collision among four schools that impacted the race. After a lengthy discussion, Appleton North, Bay Port, Middleton and Elkhorn Area got a second chance.
North won the second race and its time of 3:24.13 was better than D.C. Everest’s original winning time of 3:24.84. North was awarded the title and actually Bay Port placed second and d.C. Everest fell to third.

The Wolves defeated the Foxes to claim their third straight regional title.
Emily Heyroth led Winneconne’s offense with two goals. Morgan Fenrich, Bella Hardy, Chloe Weyers and Sydney Bramen added one goal each.
In other games:
In Division 1 regional finals, Appleton East beat Hudson 1-0 in overtime, Appleton North defeated D.C. Everest 3-2, Sheboygan North beat Germantown 4-2 and Divine Savior Holy Angels beat Oshkosh West 8-0.
In Division 2 regional finals, West De Pere beat Oshkosh North 5-1, Brookfield East beat Pulaski 2-1 and seventh-seeded Plymouth upset second-seeded Green Bay Southwwest 2-1.
Division 3 regional finals saw Notre Dame beat Waupun 5-1, Wrightstown over Sheboygan Falls 1-0 and Xavier over Kewaskum 10-1.
In Division 4, Cedar Grove-Belgium defeated Howards Grove 2-0, Kohler beat New Holstein 2-0, Oostburg downed Kiel 2-0, Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld defeated Omrro 3-0, Kettle Moraine Lutheran beat St. Mary’s Springs 6-1, Lake Mills beat Ozaukee 3-1 and Hustisford/Dodgeland defeated Winnebago Lutheran 3-0.
Green Bay Packers Family Night will be held Friday, Aug 2.
It’s the 19th year for Family Night at Lambeau Field. The team takes part in a full practice, but the event is much more than football.
There will be a fireworks and laser show, promotions and family-friendly fun.
Tickets cost $10 a piece. They go on sale July 2 at 10 a.m. You can purchase them through Ticketmaster or the Packers ticket office.
There is a group ticket program for a minimum 50-ticket purchase.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The team will be introduced on the field at 7:30 p.m.
Parking costs $5. Proceeds will go to charity.
The Green Bay Packers offense hasn’t even played a snap under new Head Coach Matt LaFleur yet and they are already showing some pop.
“Team Davante” which was led by Packers receiver Davante Adams, hit seven home runs to beat “Team Blake” 16-8 in the 2019 Green & Gold Charity Softball game at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.
The home runs were hit by receiver Jake Kumerow (2),quarterback DeShone Kizer, tight end Robert Tonyan, quarterback Manny Wilkins, receiver Geronimo Allison and running back Aaron Jones.
Coach Matt LaFleur threw out the first pitch in a walking boot after tearing is Achilles Wednesday night in a pickup basketball game.
