Kaukauna Man Bound Over For Trial In Fatal Punching Incident
The 35-year-old Kaukauna man suspected of delivering a fatal punch to an Oshkosh man has been bound over for trial. Christopher Barry was recently in Winnebago County court for a preliminary hearing on a 2nd degree reckless homicide charge. The charge stemmed from the October 12th death of 47-year-old Steven Mallas who he punched in the jaw over $18 taken in a bar. Mallas suffered a broken jaw and died from complications from that battery. The incident happened on a sidewalk outside the bar. Barry will be arraigned on July 1st. He’s being held in the County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.
Waupun Youth Lies About Being Abducted
A ten-year-old Waupun boy is in trouble trying to create sympathy for himself and going about it in the wrong way. Last Tuesday afternoon police responded to the 700 block of West Spring Street for a report that a boy had escaped from an abductor. The youth claimed his abductor had a gun. Investigators learned the boy had made up the story. He was in hot water with his mother for stealing money and lying about it. The boy has been referred to Fond du Lac County Juvenile Intake.
Task Force Hearing On Suicide Prevention In Ripon Today
State Representative Joan Ballweg brings the Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention she chairs to Ripon today. Prior to the committee’s public hearing at Ripon College’s Great Hall there will be the screening of the documentary film Kids in Crisis: You’re Not Alone, which follows four Wisconsin teenagers and their experiences with mental health challenges. The screening is at 10:30 am. followed by the hearing at noon, which is open for public testimony following invited speakers. It’s the third public hearing for the task force.
FDL Police Captain Goldstein Promoted To Assistant Chief

Fond du Lac Police Chief Bill Lamb has announced the promotion of Captain Aaron Goldstein to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police. Assistant Chief Goldstein will be succeeding Assistant Chief Steve Thiry who is retiring next month after 27 years of extraordinary dedication and distinguished service to the City of Fond du Lac Police Department. Assistant Chief Goldstein joined the Department in 1998 as a Police Officer. In 2005 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 2012 to the rank of captain.
Dead Bird Hotline
An official with the Fond du Lac County Health Department is asking residents to report any dead birds they come across. Kim Mueller says specific types of birds will die from the mosquito borne illness West Nile virus. What we are trying to do is see if we can get one of these birds that somebody that would find to test positive for West Nile because that would tell us that West Nile is now circulating in our community.” She says blue jays, ravens, crows and bigger black birds are the specific type of dead bird they would like to have reported. Keeping Broadcasting Relevant
The president and CEO of the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association says they would like to make sure the radio and television industry remains relevant and becomes even more relevant. Michelle Vetterkind says there are over 400 radio and television stations in the state and most of them are WBA members. She says that’s a broad field to draw from for both young professionals and experienced broadcasters who can mentor them. She says they would also like to preserve broadcasting’s history. “The history of broadcasting in Wisconsin that historical perspective you certainly cannot discredit that at all. So it is really merging the up and comers with our very, very rich and vibrant historical perspective.” Vetterkind made her comments during a visit to our Hometown Broadcasting stations. Hometown Broadcasting is a WBA member.
Zimdars Attended Wisconsin FFA Convention
Among those attending the Wisconsin FFA Convention in Madison this past week was Nate Zimdars of Ripon. Zimdars is the Wisconsin FFA Alumni Vice President. He used to attend the convention when he was a student in Ripon. He says Ripon’s FFA program remains strong with FFA Advisor and Teacher Natasha Paris leading the way. “She has really upped the energy among those students and fortunately we are very active in the community. Those students have been traveling to more conferences across the state to learn about leadership, participate in different speaking contests or different development events” Zimdars says 22,000 students participate in FFA programs in the state learning about agriculture’s $88.3 billion impact on the Wisconsin economy.
