Smith Elementary School In Oshkosh Being Closed
The Oshkosh School Board voted unanimously Wednesday night to close the 124-year-old Smith Elementary School. The vote was 7 to nothing. As one of the district’s oldest schools it would have required $3.7 million in major repairs. That would have included upgraded plumbing, new flooring, backup generators, replacing the roof and more. Students will be transferred to Jefferson Elementary School. There are currently 162 students attending the school. The board recently held three information meetings about the possibility of closing the school.
Neenah Man Charged For Allegedly Driving Drunk And Injuring His Children
A 40-year-old Neenah man who is suspected of driving drunk and crashing into a power pole while his three children were in the car with him has been charged. Nathan Earwood will make his initial court appearance in Winnebago County court on driving while under the influence causing injury charges on July 22nd. According to the criminal complaint his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. He allegedly told Neenah Police officers during the April 2nd incident that he had brake problems and couldn’t stop.
Pie Thrower Not Competent To Stand Trial
Charges have been dropped against a 22-year-old Beaver Dam man accused of spitting and throwing a pie into the face of a Dodge County Sheriff’s deputy. A doctor determined that Mark Gallagher is not competent, and the state moved to dismiss charges, which include felony Resisting and misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct. The dismissal came with the condition that Gallagher sign a placement order to go into protective custody. While he was being evicted on April 5th Gallagher was belligerent and when the deputy arrived on scene Gallagher grabbed the pie and threw it in the deputy’s face.
Heat Inside A Car Can Reach Deadly Levels
We arrived at a time of the year when kids and pets shouldn’t be left in the car alone during peak daytime temperatures. Andrew Beckett of Ready Wisconsin says even if you crack a window temperatures inside the vehicle can rise to dangerous levels very quickly. “So if you’re going anywhere leave the pets at home, don’t leave children inside a parked car. Cracking a window is not enough take them with you. It could be an extremely tragic situation very quickly if you leave someone inside a parked car.” According to experts at 80 degrees the inside of car can reach 99 degrees in 10 minutes and 114 degrees in half an hour. In an extreme case police in Missouri are investigating the death of an 11-month-old baby girl who was left in car for 15 hours last Sunday. The temperature outside the vehicle was 79 degrees.
Big Brothers Big Sister Big Event
Reservations are being accepted for the Big Brothers Big Sister of Fond du Lac County Big Event. It will be held at The Radisson in Fond du Lac on Thursday, July 11th and will feature a steak and lobster dinner, mixologists competition, live and silent auctions and more. Rae Nell Halbur of Big Brothers says three littles are graduating out of high school and will be recognized during the dinner along with the Big of the Year. She says last year 10 kids graduated and one of the Bigs who had been with their little a long time got emotional. He was very almost kind of emotional and the little kind of looked at him funny and men don’t always express their feeliings that well and it was very, very neat.” Tickets for the fundraiser are $100 a piece or $800 for a table of eight.
