Ripon Getting A Public Works Committee

The Ripon Common Council this week approved an ordinance that repeals a former ordinance and would recreate a Public Works Board, this time in the form of a committee. Mayor Gary Will made sure that everyone was aware that the committee would be advisory in nature and would have no independent authority. Alderman Aaron Becker had been pushing for the committee and told Council members two residents had already told him they would be interested in serving on the committee. The ordinance recommended five members consisting of three Council members and two members of the public appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Council. Terms for the two citizen members would be two years.

Pavement Buckling Warning

With hot, humid weather officials with the state’s Department of Transportation are asking motorists to be alert for the potential of pavement buckling and for highway maintenance crews making repairs. Pavement buckles are most common during the first few heat waves of the season when the weather quickly goes from cool to very hot, causing pavement to expand. DOT officials recommended buckling up, watching for slowing traffic, checking 511 Wisconsin for updates and alerts, and reporting any pavement issues by calling 911.

Fund For Beaver Dam Murder Victim’s Daughter Growing

A fund established to help the child whose mother was murdered in Beaver Dam earlier this year has raised over $5,300. Authorities announced the totals this week in a Facebook post. The Beaver Dam Police Charities created the account with American Bank to collect funds for the child caught in the middle of the tragic situation that unfolded on March 23, resulting in the death of the child’s mother and the arrest of her father. The money will be transferred to a benefit fund set up in the child’s name in Illinois to be used for care and college expenses. Stacia Hollinshead was shot to death while she and her 5-year-old daughter were visiting with the girl’s grandparents.

Berlin Schools Promote Nolan

Nolan previously served as the District’s Multi-Level Systems Support Coordinator.  District Superintendent Dr. Carl Cartwright says, “Jena’s previous work in setting up the instructional coaching system, within the District’s multi-tiered system of support framework, make her an excellent choice for Director of Curriculum and Instruction.”  During her last three years in the coordinator’s position she helped District Leadership transition the Middle School to grading for learning and created a District coaching framework. She also worked in the District as a 5th grade teacher for nine years.

She says there are events planned throughout the day beginning with a pancake breakfast at the American Legion and 4 on the 4th Fun Run at Reilly’s Pub. Events will be held throughout the day at Deacon Mills Park including music and at 12:45 a boat parade. About 4 pm a KC-135 Stratotanker will do a flyover over the downtown and the parade begins in the downtown at that time. At dusk fireworks will be shot off over Dartford Bay. Walsh says they are still taking donations to help pay for the cost of the fireworks. “We’ve been really lucky and it’s not just businesses it’s people who have sent in $5 helps. You wouldn’t believe how much that helps for us to raise that $10,000.” More information on the celebration can be found at the Chamber’s visit Green Lake website.
