Outagamie County Board Approves Sales Tax
The Outagamie County Board approved a half-percent county sales tax Tuesday night on a 28 to 4 vote. The margin is big enough to overcome a threatened veto by County Executive Tom Nelson. The sales tax is projected to bring in $20 million in revenue a year for Outagamie County. About a quarter of the tax would be paid by people who don’t live there but visit to eat, drink and shop. County officials estimate the average household would pay $109 in sales tax a year, but property taxes on average would fall by $167 a year.

FDL County Marriage Licenses
Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg says if you are planning on getting married in the county you will need to visit their offices in Fond du Lac. She recommends getting the license at least two to three weeks before the wedding. There are a few things you will need. “Just a quick reminder that we do need certified copies of your birth certificate when you come in to apply. If you don’t have a certified copy you need to get that either from the county you were born in or the state you were born in.” Couples have to apply together and at least one of them has to have lived in the county a minimum of 30 days. If you were previously married documentation will have to show how that ended for example by death or divorce. There is a $100 fee, which has to be paid by cash or through a credit card. There is a $3 fee for the processing of the credit card. Other information on how to apply for a wedding license is available on the County Clerk’s webpage on the County’s website.
Online Sales Scams
The administrator for Wisconsin’s Trade and Consumer Protection Division has a few tips for those who like to buy things through online classifieds ads such as Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Lara Sutherlin says it’s best to deal with someone locally and if not pick a police department and check with that department to see if you can complete your transaction in their parking lot. “When you are looking at online sales one of the things that you should really think about is finding a location where you can meet them that you feel safe at and a lot of police departments offer that.” There are also red flags to watch for such as for sellers vague initial inquiries about the item. For buyers watch out for significant discounts on high tickets items. Also beware of emails or texts from someone that is not local, requests for payment by by wire, cashier’s check, money order, or prepaid debit or gift cards. Sutherlin says to also be wary of offers involving shipping.
Ripon Summer Players Staging Live Radio Play
The Ripon Summer Players will be staging a “live” radio play at the Ripon Public Library this weekend. Seven Keys to Baldpate is “a mysterious melodramatic farce” written by George M. Cohan. Director Bob Amsden says it takes place in the 1940s at the remote and rustic Baldpate Inn where a popular novelist locks himself away to write a murder mystery within 24 hours to win a bet. But there’s constant interruption at the supposedly deserted lodge. Amsden says it will be staged like an actual old-time radio play. “It’s going to be like what you might think of old time radio like if you’ve ever listened to Garrison Keillor and have the sound affects and the narrative of some of the scenery it’s going to be like that before a live audience.” Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance at Ripon Drug Store, Ripon Noon Kiwanis Club members or at the door.
