Brook Lopez scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, Giannis Antetokounmpo added 24 and the Milwaukee Bucks rallied in the final minutes to beat the Toronto Raptors 108-100 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday night. Lopez had a dunk with 2:20 left to put the Bucks ahead for good, added a 3-pointer on the next Milwaukee possession to push the lead to four and the team that finished the regular season with the NBA’s best record — after trailing for the overwhelming majority of the game — did just enough in the final minutes to grab the series lead. Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points and Kyle Lowry added 30 for the Raptors. Game 2 is Friday night.
The NBA Western Conference Finals continue tonight as Golden State hosts Portland. The Warriors won game one over the Trail Blazers Tuesday night, 116-94.
Gio Gonzalez continued to make the most of his second stint in Milwaukee, allowing one run while pitching into the sixth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 on Wednesday night. Gonzalez (2-0) was hardly dazzling in his fourth start this season, but the veteran lefty did enough to again reward the Brewers’ faith in bringing him back. Gonzalez finished last year with Milwaukee, going 3-0 in five starts down the stretch, and the Brewers made it to the NL Championship Series. But he was a free agent until he signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in March. After opting out of his deal with New York, he returned to a Milwaukee team in need of some rotation help. Jesus Aguilar ripped a two-run single off Jake Arrieta (4-4) in the third to give the Brewers a 4-1 lead and they hung on to take two of the first three games of this four-game set between two teams with playoff aspirations. Josh Hader tossed a scoreless ninth for his 11th save. The two teams finish out their four-game series this afternoon. The Phillies send RHP Zach Eflin (5-3, 2.47 ERA) to the mound against RHP Zach Davies (4-0, 1.54). First pitch is at 12:05 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
In other Brewers news, Catcher Manny Pina left in the third inning with right hamstring discomfort. RHP Chase Anderson (finger laceration) will come off the injured list and start Saturday at Atlanta. His return pushes Freddy Peralta to the bullpen.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Wednesday, Arizona 11, Pittsburgh 1, the Reds nipped the Cubs 6-5 and the Braves blanked the Cardinals 4-0.
The PGA Championship, the year’s second major tournament, gets u nderway today. Tiger Woods, winner of the Masters, is one of the favorites. World number one Dustin Johnson is vying for his second major title at Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, New York.
