Three Charged In Waupaca County Deadly Explosion

Three men charged with negligent homicide in connection with a deadly explosion in Waupaca County over the weekend have been released on $25,000 signature bonds. Forty-four-year-old Paul Casperson of Belvidere, Illinois was struck and killed when a piece from an explosive device struck him in the abdomen Sunday night near Marion. Forty-two-year-old Kenneth Niemer of Clintonville, 37-year-old Robert Mattes of New London and his 60-year-old father Scott Mattes are charged in Casperson’s death. Their initial court appearances are scheduled for June 11th. The device consisted of a homemade cannon, which consisted of a large pipe stuffed with shot gun powder, paper toweling, a long stick and an aerosol can of WD-40.
