Mike Moustakas homered twice among his four hits and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5 Thursday night. Yasmani Grandal also homered and had four hits to help the Brewers win for the third time in four games. Moustakas hit a two-run shot over the right-center field wall off Joe Musgrove in the first inning to get the Brewers on the scoreboard. His solo shot to right in the third extended Milwaukee’s lead to 4-1. It was Moustakas’ 15th homer of the season and gave him his 10th career multi-homer game. Grandal followed Moustokas’ second homer with a solo shot off the left-field foul pole to back Chase Anderson (3-0), who gave up two runs and six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Colin Moran homered in the fourth to pull Pittsburgh to 5-2, before Moustakas – 1 for 11 in his previous three games – added an RBI single in the eighth that made it 7-2. Musgrove (3-6) allowed five runs and 11 hits in six innings.

The Pirates scored runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within two and the Brewers pulled away again with four in the ninth – including Lorenzo Cain’s three-run double.

The series continues tonight as Jhoulys Chacin, who’s 3-6, goes up against another right-hander, Chris Archer, who’s 1-5. First pitch is at 6:05 and the game will be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

In other Brewers news, Travis Shaw is expected to return next week after remaining with Triple-A San Antonio through the weekend. Shaw has not played with Milwaukee since injuring his right wrist May 13.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Thursday, the Cardinals beat the Phillies 5-3. The Cubs lead the Brewers by a half game, while Pittsburgh and St. Louis are 4 ½ back and Cincinnati is six games out.

The Golden State Warriors dropped Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night, falling to the Toronto Raptors 118-109 at Scotiabank Arena.

Kawhi Leonard picked up his game after an eight-point first half to finish with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists. But he struggled from the field, hitting 5-of-14 shots and looked off his game at times, failing to hit his second field goal until the final two minutes of the first half.

Marc Gasol tallied 20 points and seven rebounds in his NBA Finals debut. Finals veteran Danny Green chipped in 11 points while hitting 3 of 7 3 pointers. And Fred VanVleet sparked the Raptors in a key second-quarter run, finishing with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 34 points and Klay Thompson chipped in with 21.

As they prepare to bounce back in Game 2, however, the Warriors may end up being without yet another key player. Andre Iguodala, who has already missed time this postseason with a calf injury, appeared to suffer a leg injury in the final moments of the loss on Thursday night.

Game 2 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for Sunday night at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

In golf, Ryan Moore shot a 7-under par 65 in the opening round of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin,. Ohio to take a one-stroke lead over Jordan Spieth. Ricky Fowler is among a group at 3-under which includes Wisconsin’s Steve Stricker.

Five other golfers are two shots off the pace. Tiger Woods and Phil Michelson shot two under par.

The field for the WIAA State Softball tournament was set on Thursday with sectional finals.

In Division 1, Pulaski defeated West De Pere 5-2 to return to state for the first time since 2016, and 4th time overall. The Red Raiders were the 3 seed in the sectional.

Also in Division 1, top ranked Oshkosh North defeated Oshkosh West 5-3 to advance to state. The Spartans will be making their 4th overall appearance, still looking for their first win at the state tournament.

In Division 2, #1 seed Seymour beat #2 seed Winnecone 13-7 in the Wrightstown Sectional Final. The Thunder will be making their first ever state appearance.

In Divsion 3, a pair of #2 seeds met in the Chilton Sectional Final, with Southern Door blanking Oconto 5-0. The Eagles will be making their 5th state appearance, and first since 2008.

In Division 4, undefeated Mishicot advances to state by knocking off Iola-Scandinavia in the Crivitz Sectional Final 7-3. The Tigers will be making their 3rd appearance in Madison, all coming in the last 5 years.
Also in Division 4, Horicon advances with a 7-1 win over Wisconsin Heights. Horicon, the defending champion, will be seeking a 4th state title.

In the first round of the Regional girls soccer action, Ripon lost to Sheboygan Falls 8-0.

The Green Bay Packers have placed TE Davis Koppenhaver on the reserve/retired list. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Thursday. Koppenhaver signed with the Packers as a rookie free agent out of Duke on May 3.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, defensing Northwoods League champ, open the season Saturday night at home against the Lakeshore Chinooks and the two teams will play again Sunday night. The Dock Spiders will play five home games in the next six days.
