Appleton Man’s Death At Las Vegas Jail Ruled A Homicide

The death of a 36-year-old Appleton, Wisconsin man in a Las Vegas jail two months ago has been ruled a homicide. Four Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officers put Nicholas Farah of Appleton into a restraining chair on March 31st. The Clark County coroner’s office Thursday said Farah died of asphyxia during restraining procedures. Other significant conditions included methamphetamine intoxication and obesity. Farah died at a hospital the night he was restrained. Police are investigating Farah’s death and the four officers involved in his restraint have been placed on administrative leave.

Measles Continues To Spread

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller urges those who haven’t been vaccinated against the measles to do so. She says Wisconsin’s Midwest neighbors with exception of Minnesota have all seen measles cases. She says in New York City a “Health Emergency” was declared. “The New York City Health Commissioner declared a “Public Health Emergency” and ordered that every adult and child who lives, works or spends times in like four specific zip codes needs to be vaccinated.” Mueller says no one is empowered to do that in Wisconsin, but if they were it would likely be issued through the state’s health department. The number of measles cases across the U.S. has grown to 945 in 26 different states.

Marijuana Church Busted

It sounds like the plot for a Cheech and Chong film, but a Madison church’s distribution of marijuana has gone “Up in Smoke.” Police Wednesday raided and shut down the Lion of Judah House of Rastafari. The Two men that opened the church in March had been dispensing the “sacrament” of marijuana out of a downtown storefront. In exchange churchgoers were asked for “donations.” Several people were detained during the raid.

The Ripon Summer Players will be performing the melodramatic farce Seven Keys to Baldpate at a different venue this weekend. The “live” radio play written by George M. Cohan will be performed at the Ripon Public Library. Director Bob Amsden says the Rodman Center, which houses the Benstead Theatre on the Ripon College campus is being renovated this summer, so they took the show on the road. “It was scheduled to be painted while we were going to be in rehearsal and also the lobby of the building was scheduled to be renovated this summer so we thought it best to move out.” Performances are tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are $7 and are available in advance at Ripon Drug Store, Ripon Noon Kiwanis Club members or at the door.

Ribeye Steak Sandwich Fundraiser At Grace Lutheran In Ripon Saturday

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ripon has put on Lasagna dinners to raise funds, but this weekend they shake things up a bit with their first ever Ribeye Steak Sandwich Fundraiser. Steve Hollenback is one of the grill masters. He says the money they raise will help with a couple of building improvement projects at the church. That includes updating the chapel at the back of the church and the men’s room. In addition to the food there will be a 50/50 raffle and about 20 baskets have been placed in a silent auction with some nice items in them. The top baskets include Packer items. The top two, we’ve had a Bart Starr jersey donated. Now that he passed this weekend of course that will be extra special and a married couple from our church donated four preseason Packer tickets.” The Packers tickets will be split up among two baskets. Adult meals will include the Ribeye Steak Sandwich, while kids meals will have an All-beef Hot Dog. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for kids. They can be purchased at BMO Harris Bank, the church on West Griswold Street and Ripon Drug. The steak fry will run from 11 am to 6 pm Saturday.
