Firefighter Killed In Appleton Shooting Identified

Authorities have released the name of the veteran Appleton firefighter who was shot and died after responding to a medical emergency at the Valley Transit Center in Appleton Wednesday evening. Mitchell Lundgaard was a 14 year veteran of the Appleton Fire Department. A 47-year-old Wausau area man arriving on a bus suffered a seizure and while he was being attended to he pulled a gun and shot at police. Lundgaard was hit by the fire. He died later at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah. The shooter was shot during an exchange of gun fire and died at a hospital. A police officer and woman bystander were also shot during the incident. The officer was released from the hospital Thursday and the woman is in stable condition.
