Jury Trial Set For Dodge County Murder Suspect

A four-day jury trial is scheduled for the 21-year-old Portage man suspected in the shooting death of a Beaver Dam man. The trial in Dodge County court for Nigel Schultz will kick off on September 9th. He’s facing a first-degree intentional homicide and other charges. He’s suspected of killing 36-year-old Bradlee Gerke last Halloween. Gerke’s body was found in a shallow grave in a cow pasture in the Town of Lebanon. It had been covered with gasoline and shot multiple times in the head and chest. Schultz told investigators he had taken Gerke’s phone and Food Share Card and confessed to the shooting.

Ripon Senior Center Donations Sought

Officials with the Ripon Senior Center are now taking donations as they look for a new building and location to accommodate increased membership. Center Director Noreen Johnson says there are a couple of ways to give. “If anybody wants to help us out they can either make a check out to the Ripon Senior Center Association, Inc, it’s non-profit, so they can possibly take it off their taxes or they can make a check to us and bring it over the Horicon Bank.” She says they haven’t decided if they want to build from scratch, purchase and existing building to remodel or add on to it, but with an aging population they need more room to operate. The current facility in the lower level of the City Hall is a little over 1,800 square feet in size.

GOP Argument Against Medicaid Expansion

The chairman of the Fond du Lac County Republican Party says there’s more to the argument than just taking free federal money to expand BadgerCare or what is really Medicaid. Rohn Bishop says at first that money wouldn’t cost the state, but that changes when the money runs out and the state would then be responsible for funding that expansion. He says it also would cause more people to go onto the program. “So basically you’re putting more people on welfare and that is something as Republicans we don’t want to encourage. We want people to go out and get a job and not have to go on government programs.” Bishop also points out that reimbursement rates aren’t as good for Medicaid, which means those paying for private insurance are making up the difference with higher health insurance premium rates.

Town Of Ripon Outdoor Burning

Town of Ripon residents are allowed to do some outdoor burning. Police Captain Howard Stibb says there are a few provisos. “In the Town of Ripon you can burn only during daylight hours and after dark right now would be after 9 or 9:30, so you can burn up until that time.” He says they do ask that you call the City of Ripon dispatch center at (920) 748-2888 and let them know your name, address, and what you’re burning so it isn’t called in as an uncontrolled burn. No outdoors burning is allowed in the City of Ripon unless it is in a fire pit for recreational or cooking purposes and only with clean wood.
