Oshkosh Hosting GOP Convention This Weekend

The Republican Party of Wisconsin will host its annual convention this weekend in Oshkosh. Rohn Bishhop is the chairman of the Republican Party of Fond du Lac County. He says Friday night will feature Candace Owens formerly of “Turning Point USA” and the brat fry put on by U.S. Senator Ron Johnson. Bishop says it will be a different convention because unlike recent state conventions it won’t feature political superstars like Scott Walker or Paul Ryan. ” He is probably the best and most well known governor in the country, he was one of the most successful governors in the country, one of the most influential and he is no longer the governor and then also for the last several years we have had Paul Ryan he’s been the Speaker of the House and second in line to be the President.” Bishop says the convention will also be a regrouping effort following the mid-term elections.

Ripon Common Council Preview

The Ripon Common Council tonight will get a report on the 2018 annual room tax report and hear about the latest room tax agreement with the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce. That three-year agreement would require the marketing of all lodging establishments on the chamber’s website. The Council will discuss the possibility of creating a Board of Public Works and review the city’s brush pick up policy. The meeting is at 7 pm at the City Hall Council Chambers.

SSA Impostor Calls On The Rise

The Federal Trade Commission says residents lost $19 million to Social Security Administration impostors last year more than the peak year for IRS scams. Lara Sutherlin is the administrator for Wisconsin’s Trade and Consumer Protection Division. She says they’ve seen a significant uptick in the number of Social Security Administration impostor calls. “They ask you for your Social Security Number and other important information and they try to get this from you by telling you there is some sort of crisis with your account. So first all the Social Security Administration is not going to call you from out of the blue.” She says they may even spoof the phone number of the Social Security Administration or names they’ve gotten off the Social Security Administration website to make it sound more legitimate. Sutherlin says the Social Security Administration uses the U.S. Mail and will not call you and ask for money, gift cards or bank account information.

Dodge County Supervisors Criticize Sheriff’s Move To Temporarily Fill Position

A few Dodge County Board supervisors are questioning a recent personnel move on the drug task force by Sheriff Dale Schmidt. Last month, the county board tabled Schmidt’s request to convert a detective’s position to a sergeant’s position until an audit of the department is completed in August. Supervisor Kira Sheahan-Malloy acknowledges that Schmidt was within his constitutional authority to make the temporary change, but she says he did so in direct conflict with the county board’s wishes. Schmidt says the detective’s position was vacant at the time of his request and he did not want to leave it unfilled until a permanent decision could be made this summer. The sheriff refutes the claim that the sergeant’s position is limited to administrative tasks and says that position is needed to conduct vital investigations.

Mercury Safety Award Prize Donated To Fire Departments

Thanks to more than eight and a half million hours of no lost time injuries at Mercury Marine’s Plant 12 in Fond du Lac fire departments for the City and Town of Fond du Lac each recently received $5,000 checks. The incredible safety record was achieved by the plant and earned them the Brunswick Safety Leadership Award and a check for $10,000, which they in turn donated to the Town’s Volunteer Fire Department and the City’s Fire and Rescue Department last Friday. City of Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says they are extremely grateful. The plant’s safety record dates back to 2004 capped by zero recordable injuries in 2018.
