Former Wisconsin Governor Talks About Role As An Alzheimer’s Caregiver
As daunting as being Governor of Wisconsin may have been for Martin Schreiber the challenge before him these days is much more personal. For the past 11 years he has been a caregiver and loving spouse to his wife Elaine who has Alzheimer’s. He wrote a memoir about that My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver, which he will talk about Thursday afternoon at 1:30 pm at the Markesan Resident Home in Markesan. Schreiber will discuss the enormous need for caregivers to build support systems and self-care. He says for those with dementia what they remember is precious to them and sometimes you have to support that belief. For instance Elaine still asks about her parents who passed away years ago. “She asks me how are they, I said your parents are doing well. Your Mom likes working at church, your Dad likes his sports. That’s therapeutic fibbing.” The presentation at the Markesan Resident Home is free and open to the public. Copies of Schreiber’s book will be available for purchase. The event is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, Green Lake County and Markesan Resident Home.
