The Brewers lost at Los Angeles last night to the Angels, 5-2.
Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich and two-time American League MVP Mike Trout met on the field prior to the Angels’ 5-2 win in the opener of a rare Interleague series between the Brewers and Angels, then put their skills on full display before the late-arriving fans had even settled into their seats.
After Yelich made a highlight reel catch in the second inning, Trout robbed him of what looked to Yelich like a home run in the third with a leaping catch at the left-center-field wall. Before descending into the Brewers’ dugout, Yelich doffed his helmet toward Trout in a show of respect.
The play loomed as a game-changer as the teams played a tight 3-2 game into the bottom of the eighth inning, when Justin Bour‘s two-run homer gave the Angels a bit more breathing room.
Mike Moustakas homered for the Brewers, the 150th of his career. Christian Yelich continued his start with two hits.
The team’s meet again tonight. Freddy Peralta makes his second straight road start, coming off 11 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings of a 1-0 nothing win over the Reds. Peralta was the first Milwaukee pitcher to work past the sixth inning this season. Matt Harvey goes for the Angels. First pitch is at 7:10 CDT. The game can be heard on AM100 and 98.3 FM, WiSS.
The Green Bay Packers players returned to Lambeau Field to begin the team’s offseason workouts on Monday. Among the players was quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has been under fire since a Bleacher Report article was released four days ago chronicling his relationship with former Head Coach Mike McCarthy.
Rodgers joined ESPN Wisconsin’s Jason Wilde and Mark Tauscher on Monday to respond to the article.
“The thing is about this article — it’s not a mystery. This was a smear attack by a writer looking to advance his career, talking with mostly irrelevant, bitter players who all have an agenda.”
“They are advancing their own careers or just trying to stir old stuff up and then what happens is the same tired media folks picking it up and talking about it who this just emphasizes their opinion about me already. It’s …The crazy thing is there’s super slanted opinions in that piece stated as fact. And then there’s quote-unquote facts which are just outright lies,” Rodgers said.
The article accuses Rodgers of having a lot of problems with former head coach Mike McCarthy which stemmed from the 2005 NFL Draft. Rodgers, rumored to be a top pick, sat in the green room waiting to hear his name called. The San Francisco 49ers passed on Rodgers with number one overall pick and instead selected Alex Smith. McCarthy was the 49ers offensive coordinator. Rodgers would fall 23 spots to Green Bay.
Rodgers said he doesn’t hold a grudge as the article depicts. Rodgers acknowledged disagreements with McCarthy but said it was due to both of them being “alpha males” and “stubborn.”
The article also mentioned Rodgers “overruling” or blatantly not listening to his coach’s play calls. He denied that.
Another story brought up was a phone conversation between Rodgers and Packers president & CEO Mark Murphy after new Head Coach Matt LaFleur was hired. According to Bleacher Report, Murphy told Rodgers “Don’t be the problem.”
After the round, Packers president & CEO Mark Murphy then called Rodgers. This is reportedly when the “don’t be the problem” conversation would have happened. But Rodgers says it never did.
The Packers will have players including Rodgers available for comment Wednesday afternoon.
Virginia overcame a Texas Tech comeback in the second half and outlasted the Red Raiders in overtime to capture their first national men’s basketball championship Monday, with a 85-77 victory in Minneapolis.
It was an unprecedented turnaround for the Cavaliers and head coach Tony Bennett, who became the first 1-seed to be upset by a 16-seed just a year prior, when they infamously bowed out in the first round to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
DeAndre Hunter hit two critical threes with the Cavaliers on their heels late, one in regulation and one again in overtime, and his 27 points led the team. Star guard Kyle Guy had 24.
Hunter nailed a three-point jumper to put Virginia up two with just over two minutes to go in overtime, spurring Virginia ahead for good.
Both schools were going for their first national titles backed by their hard-nosed defenses that were among the best in the nation.
The result gives the NCAA Tournament its first first-time champion since coach Billy Donovan won it all with Florida in 2006.
Virginia had lost its previous two trips to the Final Four, in 1981 and 1984.
Texas Tech reached the Elite Eight for the first time last season.
The last time two teams who had never won a championship played in the title game was Michigan State against Indiana State in 1979.
That’s right, Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird. Magic’s Spartans won that game.
Discarded by Pittsburgh, veteran safety Morgan Burnett has landed in Cleveland. The Browns addressed one of their open starting safety spots on Friday by signing Morgan, who was released earlier this week by the Steelers following a disappointing 2018 season. Cleveland also signed quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who was out of a job after the American Alliance of Football folded this week.
The 30-year-old Burnett gives the Browns depth and experience at a position that has undergone major changes lately. General manager traded Jabrill Peppers to the New York Giants as part of the deal for star receiver Odell Beckham and released Derrick Kindred on Monday.
The Browns acquired defensive back Eric Murray from Kansas City on Monday in a trade for defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah.
Burnett has made 104 career NFL starts. He played eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers before becoming a free agent and signing a three-year, $14.5 million deal with the Steelers last year. However, he got hurt during training camp and eventually lost his starting job to rookie Terrell Edmunds, a first-round draft pick.
