Suspect In Brief Standoff In Ripon Facing Child Sexual Assault And Abuse Charges

1 April 2019 News

Charges are being brought against a 57-year-old man involved in a brief standoff with police in Ripon last Friday evening. In late 2018 Ripon Police, Fond du Lac County Social Services, and the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Department were involved in investigating allegations of child sexual assault and abuse against the suspect. Probable cause was found to arrest him. He briefly left the state, but police learned he had returned to Ripon Friday and was at a residence in the 500 block of Newbury Street. A woman who left the residence in a vehicle told officers the suspect was in the residence. Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says the man was in there with another adult and a small child. They established contact with him by phone. “Officers advised him that he was, we had probable cause to arrest him for some charges and during the course of that conversation with him the suspect did indicate that he had armed himself with a knife in the residence so negotiations were started with him.” After an hour of negotiations the suspect surrendered and walked out of the residence. The child in the residence was unharmed and was turned over to a parent. Wallner says the man was taken to a hospital for some treatment and then to the Fond du Lac County Jail. Charges that have been referred to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s office include, First Degree Sexual Assault of a child, Engaging in repeated acts of sexual assault of the same child, physical abuse of a child, delivery of narcotics and drug paraphernalia to a minor, and failure to comply with officer attempting arrest. Police were assisted at the scene by Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies and Guardian Ambulance.
