Recount May Be Needed For Third Spot On Ripon School Board

Both Nate Zimdars and Margaret “Betsy” Heffernan (pictured below) were hoping to give back to the Ripon School District they were educated in by serving on the school board and they won that opportunity in Tuesday’s election. Out of four candidates they received the most votes Zimdars with 1,463 votes and Heffernan with 1,260. Gary Rodman edged Dan Zimmerman for the third seat, but there could be a recount with Rodman getting 1,061 votes and Zimmerman 1,060. Zimdars was thankful for the support. Heffernan too was grateful.

Jaye Wins Lakeside Municipal Court Race

Incumbent Lakeside Municipal Court Judge Jerry Jaye got 53 percent of the vote in his race with Ripon Attorney Douglas Iverson to win Tuesday. Jaye got 671 more total votes winning Fond du Lac and Waushara counties, but losing to Iverson in Green Lake County. Jaye says it’s a tribute to the whole court that voters supported his reelection.  It was the first time since the court began in 1997 that Jaye has been opposed for reelection.

Election Notes

Among some of the notable election results Town of Ripon Town Chairperson Barry Vande Brink defeated challenger George Skip Wittler 253 to 102 in Tuesday’s election. Karen Fontaine won the Town of Eldorado Clerk’s race by seven votes over Michele Westphal 169 to 162. Daniel Redeker and Mike Walgenbach were elected as Village of Brandon trustees over Jane Newton. One-time North Fond du Lac Village Administrator Chuck Hornung won election as a village trustee. Incumbent Ann Price won the other seat.

School district voters in Fond du Lac and Oakfield passed referendums. In Fond du Lac two questions asked to borrow a total of $98.5 million to make facilities improvements while Oakfield voters approved exceeding the district’s revenue cap for operations for a total of $5.3 million over the next five years.

Turnout Better Than Anticipated At The Polls

Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg was pleased with the turnout for Tuesday’s Spring Election. She had predicted about a 25 to 26 percent turnout of registered voters, but was pleasantly surprise when 40 percent of the voters int the county cast their ballots. She says 22,776 people voted. She notes they had to print out an additional 4,000 ballots.
