Sewer Back Up Issues Recapped For Ripon Common Council

12 April 2019 News

Ripon Utility Manager Chris Liveris addressed the Common Council this week about the sewer backups that have been occurring in resident’s basements this spring. Liveris said over a recent week between the heavy snow pack, rain storms and warm temperatures they went from treating 1.39 million gallons of wastewater a day to a high of 3.95 million gallons. He says problems with manhole covers and illegal sump pumps put a lot of clear water that should have gone into the storm sewers into the sanitary sewer system. Liveris noted the last time they had the same type of backup issues was during Watson Street construction and further back heavy rains and flooding in 2008, One way of easing the problem would be to replace the old clay piping from the Barlow Park lift station with 12-inch plastic piping, which Liveris feels would increase the flow rate. He estimates the cost for new pipe from the lift station to Metomen Street would be $125,000, but only $95,000 if it was done as part of a street project where the street would have to be torn up any way. During the meeting Mayor Gary Will showed the Council a device that you can put in your basement floor drain that will prevent sewer back ups. He says it’s not expensive and can be purchased at Menard’s.
