Antiques and Fine Art Appraiser Mark F. Moran will be appraising items at the Ripon Public Library this Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. It’s his third time at the library in the past five years. Moran does about 140 appraisal events across the Midwest each year. He says everyone has something they wonder about whether it is valuable, but he says most times they just want to know whether the stories they heard as an item was passed down through the years are true. He says sometimes he does come across true treasures like a signed lithograph someone brought in to the library in Viroqua that they found in a home they bought. “It was a lithograph signed and penciled by Grant Wood that worth about $3,500 bucks. And so they left a good chunk of change hanging on the walls.” Wood was the artist who did the painting of a farmer with a pitchfork standing next to his daughter that we know as “American Gothic.” Moran says although the event at the Ripon Public Library is free you do have to register for the appraisal, which is limited to one item per person. You can register by calling the library at (920) 748-6160.
