Fire Destroys Motor Home Damages Garage In Ripon

Fire destroyed a motor home and damaged a detached garage at 1233 Metomen Street in Ripon Thursday afternoon. Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul says the owner was in the motor home when it started to smoke and called 911. When firefighters arrived the motor home was fully involved and the fire had spread to the roof of the garage. Saul says they concentrated on saving the garage and the nearby home. They got help from the Brandon-Fairwater and Markesan Fire Departments, Ripon EMS, Ripon Police, and the Algoma Fire Department covered calls at the fire station while they fought the blaze. Foam and water were put on both the garage and the home. Saul says it was a battle to put out the fire in the garage. “Up in the ceiling area there was a lot of fire up there, the Rapid Response truck it did it’s job. The camper was a write-off. We saved the garage and nothing ever got to the house.” The cause of the fire was mechanical. Saul urges those with campers and RVs to make sure they have working smoke detectors in them. He says RVs and motor homes burn so fast, if you don’t have a smoke detector in them you don’t have much of a chance to survive a fire. The time of the fire call was 1:10 pm.
