FDL County Sales Tax Helps Keep Some Costs In Check
Fond du Lac County Board Chairperson Marty Farrell says at a time when county government isn’t growing the county’s half-percent sales tax helps them pay for costs they can’t do anything about. He says it keeps the cost of borrowing down, which also keeps those costs from going on the tax levy. Farrell says they have a couple hundred fewer county employees then when he joined the county board in 1994. “There are 250 fewer employers, however their health care costs are going up. We are spending $11 million a year on health insurance for employees. That’s staggering out of about a $40 million tax levy.” He says technology costs are also rising and this year the county’s Information Systems Department is going to need over $305,000 just to update systems and equipment that are in place.
Apprenticeships Benefit Students And Employers
A bill from State Senator Dan Feyen and State Representative Joan Ballweg would provide school districts with more funding for career and technical education programs in high schools. Ballweg says districts were promised $1,000 per student, but it’s proven such a popular program they have had to pro-rate that amount. She says apprenticeship programs have proven beneficial for both students and employers. Recently she attended a CESA 6 meeting in Oshkosh where two Ripon High School students talked about the apprenticeship jobs they have in Green Lake. “It’s turn out that both of them are working in Green Lake. One in hospitality at ThunderBoss (Bar & Grill) and one doing IT and web development at Rowley Tool (& Die).” The state lawmaker from Markesan says one of the really good things Wisconsin does is provide apprenticeship programs for high school students.

Culver’s Sales Benefit Ripon Middle School Drama Program Tonight
The Ripon Middle School’s drama program will benefit from a local restaurant tonight. Brian Reilly is the director of this spring’s “Annie” musical. He says Culver’s on West Johnson Street will be donating a portion of tonight’s sales between 5 and 8 pm to the drama program. As for the musical it will feature about 40 to 45 students. “This year is one of our smaller groups. It’s about I think 40 to 45 students. Normally we have between anywhere from 50 to 60 students trying out for the middle school play and they all come out and participate in some form or another.” During tonight’s fundraiser at Culver’s Middle School theatre students will be helping to serve and bus tables, and greet customers; telling them all about this year’s fantastic spring musical. “Annie” will be performed on April 4th, 5th and 6th.
