Lawyer For Steven Avery Seeking New Trial

The lawyer for Steven Avery is asking the court to throw out his conviction and order a new trial. Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are in prison for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Attorney Kathleen Zellner filed a motion Monday claiming a fraud was perpetrated on the jury in Avery’s trial a dozen years ago. She argues that remains found in a gravel pit in Manitowoc County belonged to Halbach. She says that calls into question the prosecution’s narrative that Halbach was murdered in Avery’s garage and burned in his burn pit. The motion also seeks the removal of the Manitowoc County judge presiding over the case. Zellner says the judge lacks the ability to be impartial.

Fire Destroys Downtown Appleton Restaurant

Fire destroyed the Author’s Kitchen and Bar in downtown Appleton early Wednesday morning. Fire officials say eight people were evacuated from the building and no one was inside of it. The fire call came in at 2:12 am. The building was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is being determined.

Flooding Reminder

Fond du Lac County Emergency Management is reminding county residents to be aware of the potential for flooding in the next couple days as the snow melts and rain continues. There is a flood watch in effect until 7 am Friday morning. Residents are being urged to use caution when traveling in low-lying areas and other areas prone to flooding – remember turn around, don’t drown! It only takes a few inches of water to sweep a person off their feet and as little as one foot of water to move a vehicle. Flooding may occur in areas not normally prone to flooding due to storm catch basins being blocked with ice and snow.

Measles Vaccine Important

An officials with the Fond du Lac County Health Department says measles was nearly eradicated in the early 2000’s, but it’s been making a comeback. Part of that is the choice of parents and guardians not to have their children vaccinated. As of last Friday 228 measles cases were reported in 12 states. Joyce Mann of the Health Department says it’s highly contagious and can have some serious consequences. “About 1 in every 5 people with measles will be hospitalized, about 6 percent of them will develop pneumonia and a smaller percentage could develop something callled encephalitis which is swelling of the brain.” She says the vaccine will afford protection against the measles and studies show nine of ten people who don’t get the vaccine will develop measles if they are exposed to the disease.

Birthplace Of The Republican Party Marks 165th Anniversary

Ripon’s Little White Schoolhouse will celebrate the 165th anniversary of the founding of the Republican Party next week. The National Historic Landmark was the birthplace of the party on March 20th of 1854. Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith says Alan Bovay and the 53 voters at that meeting gave birth to more than a political party. “What we would like people to understand is we are not here to pitch a political party we are here to get you inside and to let you know why those people got together and really created a civil rights movement more than anything outside of creating a political party.” The building is now a National Historic Site that offers tours May-October that teaches guests about the importance of the events that occurred in Ripon not only locally, but throughout America. The Birthplace of the Republican Party National Historic site will open for the 2019 season on Saturday, May 4th.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DNR Warden Knorr at 920-450-0748 or call the DNR’s Hotline at 1-800-TIP-WDNR. Photos of the shelter are posted on the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Facebook page.
