Flood Victims Asked To Document Losses

The Communications and Emergency Management Director for Fond du Lac County says it’s a bit premature to be talking about being reimbursed about flood damage. But Bobbi Hicken says that didn’t stop residents in the county and Fond du Lac in particular from asking hours after the flooding. “People are calling and wanting to know how to get funding or to get reimbursement for damages. We do not know it is way too early to know if there is going to be any funding made available.” She does ask anyone affected by the flooding to document their losses, any work done in connection with their losses and expenses and take lots of pictures. She says that will be very helpful if funding is made available. Residents with flood damage to their homes are encouraged to call 2-1-1 to report the damages

Dodge County Work Release Walk Aways Backs In Custody

Two women who walked away from the Dodge County Jail while on work release are back in custody. Last month 39-year-old Jennifer Petersen was serving a 270-day sentence for theft and was scheduled to be released on April 11th. Connie Smiley was serving a 160-day sentence for contempt of court. The 36-year-old Smiley failed to return to the jail on January 30th.

Boys And Girls Club And BRAVE Room For Both

There’s interest in bringing the Boys & Girls Club to Ripon, but the School District would also like to maintain its BRAVE program. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says the BRAVE program started almost 20 years ago and is an extra boost for students who need it. She says both programs serve students after school, but there really is a different mission and focus with both programs. Next Monday the school board will vote on whether to allow the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County to use space in district buildings currently used by the BRAVE program to run Club programming in place of BRAVE. Whitrock says if the board decides against that they would still support Boys & Girl Club locating elsewhere in the community. “And I think there is important conversation around that because the school district would certainly look to support the Boys & Girls Club and would bus students to that site. Communicate everything with parents regarding that program and all of those opportunities.” She says if both programs operated in Ripon they would expect fewer students in the BRAVE program, but that would allow the district to help students who need additional academic support even more.

Sick From The Flu Stay Home

An official with the Fond du Lac County Health Department asks people who do catch the flu to do their best not to spread it. Joyce Mann says at least 170 people in the county have tested positive for the flu this season. She says while that is not quite as many as the last flu season it is a moderate level. Mann recommends staying home if you are sick. “And certainly with influenza staying home if you are sick. Washing your hands more frequently, avoiding people who are sick and taking just overall good care of yourself.” She recommends contacting your physician early if you think you have the flu and seeking their advice. She says that could help you avoid getting into significant trouble later on. Mann also suggest getting a flu shot if you haven’t had one yet.

Private Wells Covered By Flood Waters Could Be Contaminated

DNR officials are warning residents that conditions this time of year can affect the conditions of private wells. Private Water Section Chief Liesa Lehmann says snow melt, rain, and flooding can lead to well contamination. Well owners are urged to make note of any change in the color, smell or taste of their drinking water. If floods waters are near or over their wells they should assume their drinking water is contaminated. You should stop drinking the water and find another safe source, once the water recedes make sure the well is properly disinfected, and before drinking the water again sample to make the water is safe. Lehmann says disinfection and sampling is best done by a licensed well driller or pump installer. Any water supply system that has been submerged by flood waters should be pumped out once the floodwater recedes, then thoroughly disinfected and tested to determine that the water is safe.
