Mixed Reaction To Evers Budget

1 March 2019 News

State legislators had mixed reaction to Governor Tony Evers first state budget proposal. Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says, ““I thought Governor Evers knocked it out of the park tonight. This budget, the people’s budget, takes our state in a new direction. A direction that invests in the issues that matter to families across Wisconsin.” State Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac says Evers inherited is benefiting from what Republicans accomplished over the past eight years, ““Governor Evers has inherited the best budget balance that we’ve experienced in a generation, all thanks to carefully implemented, responsible fiscal reforms that have helped Wisconsin and its people prosper.”

More of Gordon Hintz’s statement:

“I thought Governor Evers knocked it out of the park tonight. This budget, the people’s budget, takes our state in a new direction. A direction that invests in the issues that matter to families across Wisconsin. It takes the first steps towards fixing our transportation infrastructure crisis. It gives Wisconsinites access to affordable, accessible health care by accepting the federal Medicaid expansion. And it works to fix the disparities that exist in our criminal justice system.”

“The Governor’s priorities are Wisconsin priorities. We know that the people overwhelmingly support our Democratic agenda. Things like redistricting reform, medical marijuana, and a tax cut for the middle class have broad, bi-partisan support. It’s time to stop the political games and work toward these policies the public wants.

“And finally, the cornerstone of this budget is a historic investment in education. From our public K-12 schools to our tech schools and UW System, the Governor knows that nothing lays the foundation for future success like world class public schools. Our students and parents deserve nothing less.

“I look forward to debating this budget, and I am hopeful that my colleagues across the aisle will listen to their constituents – the people of Wisconsin – who played such a large role in crafting this budget.”

More of Dan Feyen’s statement:

“Governor Evers has inherited the best budget balance that we’ve experienced in a generation, all thanks to carefully implemented, responsible fiscal reforms that have helped Wisconsin and its people prosper. Over the past eight years our economy has soared, we’ve experienced real economic growth in the private sector, unemployment reached an all-time low and hard-working Wisconsinites have received the tax relief that they deserve.

I’m happy to hear that Gov. Evers wants more transparency for the WEDC, that he plans to continue the UW tuition freeze, and that he is considering a tax cut for the middle-class. However, my main concern is that Gov. Evers has failed to introduce a realistic way for us to fund his countless proposals. Overall, this budget proposal exemplifies Gov. Evers’ lack of effort at working across the aisle with legislators. Once lawmakers including myself, have fully assessed the budget proposal, I’m hopeful that Gov. Evers will step up and come to the negotiating table so that we can work together to pass legislation that will have positive results for the hardworking people of Wisconsin.

In my first legislative session every bill I authored that passed received bipartisan support. I look forward to continuing to work across the aisle with my colleagues to keep Wisconsin moving in the right direction.”
