Margaret Betsy Heffernan Runs For Ripon School Board
29 March 2019 News
Margaret “Betsy” Heffernan grew up in Ripon and went through the Ripon School system. She says she’s enthusiastic about the education she received and that’s one of the reasons she’s running for a spot on the school board. She works as the Communications Manager at Alliance Laundry Systems and has a daughter and son in high school. Student mental health is one of the issues she has a strong opinion about. She feels it is a growing issue and that students need a strong supportive environment. “We need to have that support in place so that we can come around those kids not just the kids who are experiencing the issues themselves, but the other children who are seeing this and how do they respond how do they be supportive and kind. But we need those resources.” As for the district self-insuring for health insurance she says there is a tremendous amount of risk so if the district considers it a lot of thought must go into it. Heffernan also feels a play-based charter school at Barlow Park Elementary School might be what some students need. She says at meetings teachers made a really compelling case for doing things differently and taking a different approach. Heffernan is one of four candidates vying for three seats on the Ripon School Board.
