FDL County Board Will Consider Sales Tax Resolutions

The Dodge County Board’s Finance, Personnel, and Economic Development Committee is unanimously recommending that the county board repeal a sunset date for the county’s half-percent sales tax. It is also recommending that the county share some of that revenue with municipalities across the county for tax relief. County Board Chairperson Marty Farrell says the committee arrived at those decisions on two resolutions last week. He points out that the sales tax helps keep property taxes down by reducing what the county has to borrow for things like road projects or technology costs. “I’m sure that all of us, virtually all us on the board would like to be able to see the sales tax sunset and go away, but the simple fact is that if we do that it’s going to mean that property taxes have to go up.” Sharing revenue from the sales tax would be based on what a municipality’s portion of the county’s overall equalized value is. For example the City of Ripon this year would receive $55,300 while the City of Fond du Lac would get $372,860. The county board will consider the two resolutions at their March 19th meeting.
