Hintz Supports End Of Dark Store Loophole
State Representative Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh supports Governor Tony Evers’ efforts to close the “Dark Store” property tax loophole. Based on a Supreme Court decision, big box retailers are allowed to base their tax assessments on their value as a vacant store rather than a store in operation. That shifts the tax burden to residential and small business taxpayers. Hintz says local governments across the state asked that the tax loophole be fixed. The Assembly Democratic Leader points out Menard’s used the loophole for its Fond du Lac property to reduce its property value assessment from $9.2 million to $5.2 million. Evers announced Tuesday morning he would include a provision in the biennial budget to close the “Dark Store Loophole.” Last November 23 counties in referendums voted overwhelmingly in support of closing the loophole.
FDL County Considers Updating ATV Ordinances
Fond du Lac County is updating its All Terrain Vehicle ordinance. County Highway Commissioner Tom Janke will provide the Highway, Airport and Facilities Committee with an update Thursday morning. Janke says they are looking at adding some routes to the county trail system and need to update language in the ordinance. Requests are coming in from townships for adding connecting routes. He says some think adding ATV routes will make the county more of a destination for tourists. Janke isn’t certain about that, but says a lot of the routes also have to be shared with pedestrians and bicyclists. Janke feels the ordinance will be something they will need to update on a yearly basis. The committee’s meeting is at 8:30 Thursday morning at the Highway Department’s facility on Dixie Street in Fond du Lac.

Berlin Area School District Certified For Active Shooter Response
The Berlin Area School District is now certified in handling active-shooter responses. The district recently completed all of the necessary training and crisis plan precautions to become ALiCE certified. ALice was the first active shooter preparation training in the United States. ALiCE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. District Superintendent Bob Eidahl says they take their responsibility to provide a safe school environment seriously. He says that involves more than training teachers and staff. He says they also want students to know age-appropriate information that could be helpful to them should an incident occur.
