Sturgeon Spearing Water Clarity Report

7 February 2019 News

Late Wednesday afternoon the sturgeon biologist for the DNR’s Lake Winnebago System issued a water clarity report for the upcoming sturgeon spearing season. Ryan Koenigs says it is fairly clear, 12 to 13 foot visibility, north of Oshkosh off Payne’s Point and Stockbridge, but much dirtier water with 7 to 9 foot visibility throughout the southern half of the Lake. He says the average clarity is 9.5 feet, which is better than 2018, (6.5 feet) but similar to the 2017 (9.5 feet) and 2016 (9 feet) seasons. Koenigs says clarity isn’t as big a factor on the Upriver Lakes. The sturgeon spearing season starts Saturday.
