That super shootout everyone expected turned into a defensive standoff. The New England Patriots showed they can win that type of championship game, too. Tom Brady threw two perfect passes to tight end Rob Gronkowksi to set up Sony Michel’s two yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and the Patriots added a late field goal to win 13-3 in Super Bowl 53.
It was a workmanlike conclusion for the Patriots who finished the season at 14-5 with all of their losses coming on the road. The win tied New England with Pittsburgh for the most Super Bowl titles at six.
The first quarter was scoreless and it was 3-nothing at the half. The Rams tied at 3-all late in the third quarter.
The Rams high scoring offense was held in check as quarterback Jared Goff was pressured and could not find any kind of rhythm. He finished 19 of 38 for 229 yards with one interception and was sacked four times. Brandon Cook had eight catches for 120 yards. Star running back Todd Gurley managed just 35 yards rushing.
Patriots receiver Julian Edelman had 10 catches for 141 yards and was named the games MVP.
