Ripon Common Council Will Discuss Committee And County Sales Tax

The Ripon Common Council this evening will consider a couple items Alderperson Aaron Becker has brought up for discussion during past meetings. Becker would like to see the city reinstate the Finance Committee it once had. City staff put together a list of 36 cities of comparable size, eight of which have finance committees. Common Council members were supplied with a copy of those cities bylaws concerning their committees. Becker would also like to see the Council pass an advisory resolution asking Fond du Lac County to end its sale tax at the end of 2021 or let voters decide by putting a binding countywide referendum before them. The Council’s meeting is at 7 pm at the Ripon City Hall.

Resources Available For Those Quitting Smoking

The Tobacco Control Coordinator for the 5 Counties for Tobacco Free Living says if you made a resolution to quit smoking have a good plan and get lots of support. Sandy Bernier works for the Fond du Lac County Health Department and is herself a former smoker. She says you have to remember that the person trying to quit is making a lifestyle change and it is their challenge, but you can help by providing the support they ask for. She recommends setting a date to quit and removing your smoking triggers. \(“Think about do you want to quit, then think about your quit date, talk to your health care provider and talk about what has worked before what didn’t work. Did you try medication? What kind of medication did you try? And then kind of work through that process.” Bernier says if you go to Tobacco Free Living website they have links to more information and websites that will help you quit and you can also call the Wisconsin Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669. Dodge County Considering Permit For Strippers Who Work In The County

Dodge County’s Sheriff wants strippers to be required to get a permit to work in the county. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the idea came from a law on the books in Calumet County. He says the sheriff there will issue the permit if they clear a background check. Schmidt says the goal is to limit criminal activity by keeping unwanted individuals away from those establishments. Details such as the correct fees or potential penalties that would be assessed still need to be figured out. The county board’s Judicial and Protection Committee is discussing the matter. It may be months before something is enacted.

Edelstein Promoted To FDL County Deputy District Attorney

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney recently announced the appointment of Assistant District Attorney Douglas Edelstein to Deputy District Attorney. The appointment took effect Monday. The Deputy position has been vacant since last May 5th when then Deputy District Attorney Dennis Krueger unexpectedly passed away. Toney says Edelstein has been an asset to his office and the community since joining the office in 2014. He says Edelstein’s primary new duties will focus on policy creation and implementation. Edelstein says he will continue to pursue justice at the highest level and is thankful for the opportunity.

Ripon Watch Party

Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith recently confirmed that John McGivern, host of Wisconsin Public Television’s Around the Corner program, will be in Ripon for a Watch Party Wednesday night at Vines and Rushes Winery. The segment the program did on Ripon will be premiered at the Winery at 6 pm that evening. Mansmith says McGivern and several Wisconsin Public Television officials, will be at the party. Mansmith says McGivern has ties to Fond du Lac County he attended St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary. The Around the Corner segment on Ripon will air at 7 pm Thursday night on Wisconsin Public Television.

Legal And Financial Planning Seminar

The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin is offering a free Legal and Financial Planning Seminar at the Berlin Senior Center on Tuesday January 22nd. The workshop will run from 1 to 3 pm. Attorney Jennifer Koeppl of Koeppl Law Offices will present the workshop. Attendees will learn the basics of estate planning, advanced directives, guardianships, funeral pre-planning, Medicaid and Family Care, and various ways to pay for care.
