Matt LaFleur was introduced at a press conference yesterday in Green Bay as the 15th head coach in team history. He was flanked by Packers President Mark Murphy and General Manager Brian Guetekunst. Murphy said “After two long years we are ready to get back to winning.”
LaFleur said his “philosophy is to lead, teach and inspire, not only our football team, but everybody in this building. We are going to be processed-driven in the pursuit of bringing a Lombardi Trophy back here to Green Bay.”
LaFleur said he had a chance to speak with quarterback Aaron Rodgers before he was offered the head coaching job. General manager Brian Gutekunst said once they zeroed in on LaFleur, they had Rodgers reach out to him. The 39-year old accepted the job late Tuesday.
Murphy touted LaFleur’s experience with football at the college level and his experience as a quarterback. LaFleur thanked Central Michigan University for giving him his first opportunity. He’s spent 10 years working as a coach in the NFL, two of those as offensive coordinator. Last year he called the plays for the 9-7 Tennessee Titans, who just missed the playoffs. He also was an assistant coach with the Falcons and the Rams.
The hiring is expected to keep Packers’ defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and his staff intact.
