Amir Coffey scored 21 points and Minnesota put No. 22 Wisconsin in an early hole before holding off a furious late rally to win 59-52 on Thursday night.
The Golden Gophers (12-2, 2-1 Big Ten) earned their first win on the road against Wisconsin since 2009.
The Badgers (10-4, 2-1) couldn’t capitalize on several opportunities down the stretch, particularly from the free throw line. Wisconsin went 3 of 10 from the line at one point, including Ethan Happ missing the front end on back-to-back 1-and-1 situations after the Badgers had cut the lead to seven with just more than eight minutes to go.
Still, Happ’s steal and dunk, coupled with D’Mitrik Trice’s floater, cut the margin to 49-47 with two minutes left.
But then Coffey hit a runner and Dupree McBrayer turned a steal into a breakaway to end the threat.
Happ finished with 17 points to lead Wisconsin.
For the second straight year, LeRoy Butler fails to move into the finalist stage for election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The list of 25 semifinalists was narrowed down to 15 finalists on Thursday night.
The former Packers safety was the first defensive back in the NFL to record 20 career sacks and 20 career interceptions, finishing with 20.5 and 38 respectively, in 181 career games. But he was not among five defensive backs who were named finalists on Thursday, 3 of them safeties.
Clay Matthews Jr., the father of current Packer Clay Matthews, also failed to advance after being a semifinalist for the 3rd time.
Green Bay Packers President & CEO Mark Murphy will interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Friday regarding the Packers head coaching position according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
As of Thursday it looks like McDaniels will only be talking to the Packers. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports McDaniels has told the Cincinnati Bengals he’s “passing on Cincy’s request” to talk to him.
– Also today, the Packers will talk to Patriots Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores
– Saturday: New Orlans Saints Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach Dan Campbell, Saints Offensive Coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.
– Sunday: Tennessee Titans Offensive Coordinator Matt LaFleur
McDaniels was announced as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts on Feb. 6, 2018 but withdrew from the position later that day and decided to stay with the Patriots.
