The City of Ripon has six crossing guards, four of them work around the major intersections near schools and the other two are substitutes. Ripon Police Captain Troy Damsteegt says they provide a valuable service making sure kids get to and from school safely and that motorists are aware of them. He says even drivers who normally are attentive in school zones can become distracted. “Well unfortunately sometimes people do get distracted and I don’t know if they get distracted by their phone or something on their mind they don’t always watch for the crossing guards even though we have them out there with, some of them blinking stop signs and we have them in orange vests and stuff like that.” This week is Adult Crossing Guard Recognition Week in Wisconsin. Damsteegt says at the beginning of the week the Ripon Area School District had a breakfast to recognize the job crossing guards do.
